Chapter 457 - Chapter 457: Something Worth Envying

Who Constantine learned his talent for annoying people from no longer mattered. What mattered was that Selene was genuinely close to being driven insane by him.

Fortunately, she knew he was joking.

After running his mouth, Constantine still brought her to his friend's location and bought a large pile of supplies. As a veteran exorcist, he knew exactly how to make himself comfortable in harsh environments. Once everything was prepared, Constantine and Selene set off.

Night had already fallen.

No one knew how Wick was doing, but since Noah's magical traces were still present, it meant that bullet hadn't been fired yet.

"So annoying," Constantine complained, a cigarette hanging from his mouth as he sat on the camel. "He could've just waited for the guy to pull the trigger. Instead, he drags me out here to catch someone. Ever seen an employer exploit people this hard?"

"I only know you do the same thing," Selene replied, rolling her eyes as she looked up at the moon.

The moonlight washed over the desert, turning the sand into a flowing silver river. Selene liked nights like this. Even though she could tolerate the sun, she still preferred darkness.

To be honest, Selene wasn't without the possibility of becoming human again.

She simply refused.

Wizards were powerful-especially her boss, Noah Feniel. A man on the brink of becoming Sorcerer Supreme certainly had the ability to do something like that. But Selene didn't want it. She needed the power of a vampire to take revenge on vampires.

And she was satisfied with her current life.

At the Ark Exorcist Agency, people treated her well. No one rejected her for being a vampire. That wasn't because most of them were mutants either. Mutants had barely been part of the magical world for a decade.

Selene was welcome in London. Even in much of the magical world, she could move freely, undisturbed.

Everyone knew why.

She was Noah's subordinate.

And more importantly, John Constantine always took missions with her. Not because of hidden motives-anyone with eyes could see he was protecting her.

Constantine was a scoundrel. A rascal. A hopeless chain-smoker.

But to his friends and subordinates, he was always reliable.

Selene knew this. She never said it out loud, but she was deeply grateful to Noah and Constantine. Without them, she might never have learned the truth. Without their invitation and protection, she would never have had the stable life she had now.

"I've never heard your story," Selene suddenly said, looking at Constantine. "I've heard bits and pieces, but they all sound exaggerated. How did you meet Lord Feniel?"

"How did I meet Noah?" Constantine pulled the cigarette from his mouth and glanced at her. "Isn't that story everywhere? I'm guessing other agencies chalk it up to dumb luck."

"Exactly," Selene said calmly. "That's why I'd rather hear it from you."

"What's so interesting about it?" Constantine muttered, putting the cigarette back. "He was just a top-tier wizard back then. Brave. Smart. He and his sister went to Los Angeles on a trip. I happened to be there too..."

With a trace of nostalgia, Constantine began telling the story.

More than twenty years ago.

Surrounded by powerful beings. Even weakened on Earth, their identities alone were enough to crush an exorcist. Back then, he had been desperate, simply waiting to die.

Then he met a wizard.

Just a first-year student from a magic academy.

And that wizard became his lifeline.

Who could have imagined it?

The exorcist living in despair would become the head of the world's most powerful exorcist organization. The young wizard would walk a path that led toward the Sorcerer Supreme.

Fate had turned on that single encounter.

Selene listened quietly, completely absorbed.

She had heard the story before, but hearing it from Constantine himself felt different. More real. More alive. Constantine spoke at length, recounting experiences from those years as if he wanted to empty them all out.

By the time he finished, the sky had begun to brighten.

"I didn't expect your story to be this interesting," Selene said softly. "It's wonderful. I really envy you."

"Envy?" Constantine snorted. "Wait until you find out how annoying that bastard is. Then see if you still want to use that word."

"At least you're friends," Selene said. "And you trust each other."

Constantine paused.

Then, for once, he smiled.

"Enough talking. We're almost there."

He patted the camel's head, and it picked up speed. Selene shook her head. The answer was already clear from his expression.

She felt envious too.

And even more curious about Noah.

What kind of person could inspire that kind of loyalty?

Of course, fear still lingered in her heart. Noah was the one who had destroyed her former vampire clan with his own hands.

Soon, they reached the source of Noah's magic.

The area was flat. Dozens of tents were set up, with a central one that looked especially luxurious. Noah's magic radiated from that very spot.

Around the camp, men in white and black robes patrolled, faces hidden behind veils.

They looked ordinary.

They weren't.

They were elite assassins.

"Looks like this is it," Constantine said, stopping the camel. He scanned the area, then jumped down.

"This place?" Selene followed. "They look like ordinary people."

"They are," Constantine said, pulling out a cigarette. He lit it slowly. "Now you see how bored that damned Noah is. He made me deal with a bunch of normal people. And he's so bored he's running around with a gun himself."

"...Even with his status, doing this feels a bit much," Selene said hesitantly.

"He only retaliates after they attack," Constantine replied. "And he uses magic subtly. No one notices."

He walked forward, ignoring the assassins' warnings entirely.

To Constantine, they might as well not exist.

He wasn't an ordinary person. After years following Noah, he had gained countless benefits-Kamar-Taj techniques, meditation methods. He had become something far more dangerous than most wizards.

Ordinary assassins didn't even register.

Then the gunshots rang out.

Constantine stopped.

He lifted his head slightly, disdain on his face.

Ripples appeared in front of him, like water disturbed by falling stones.

"All right," he muttered. "You fired first. That makes this easy."

Bullets filled the air in front of him.

Some spun wildly. Others hung nearly motionless.

Every single one was stopped.

Not a single bullet touched him.

The assassins froze.

They had never imagined such a scene.

"Damn it... wizards?" someone whispered.

Constantine didn't give them time to think.

The cigarette stayed in his mouth. One hand in his pocket.

The other slowly lifted.
