Back in the capital, all hell broke loose. Su Gonggong had escaped.
No one could explain how it happened. The dungeons were sealed, the guards handpicked by the emperor himself. There had been no sign of struggle, no broken chains, no trace of forced entry. It was as though the man had vanished into thin air.
When Wen Zhan received the report, he was silent.
"Summon Commander Wei," he ordered quietly.
The chamber emptied within seconds, the rustle of robes echoing down the marble corridor.
A while later, Wei Tingche entered. He bowed slightly.
"Your Majesty."
Wen Zhan turned to face him. There was weariness in his eyes but he spoke calmly.
"You must've heard."
Wei Tingche nodded. Everybody had heard. Knowing exactly what he was asking about, he didn't mince words.
"What are your orders?"
Wen Zhan's voice was low.
