"Dragonite?! Did Dragonair evolve?"
Liam frowned deeply when he saw the Dragonite appear on the field. He had always thought Lance only had a Dragonair holding down his team of Dragon-type Pokémon. But now...
"And you still say you're not a Flying-type Trainer! Dragonair used to be pure Dragon-type! Now it's Flying-type too! Let's see you talk your way out of that!"
Liam pointed dramatically at Lance's Dragonite and shouted at him.
"Pfft—!!"
Lance almost coughed up blood on the spot. At first, when he saw Liam frowning in thought, he thought Liam was intimidated by Dragonite's power. Who would've thought that was what Liam was concerned about?!
"That's not the point at all!! What was I supposed to do if Dragonair evolved and gained the Flying type?! How could I have possibly changed that?!"
"Draaaa..."
Lance screamed back at Liam, practically tearing his throat, while Dragonite silently covered its face with a paw, pretending not to know him.
"Ahem. Both Pokémon are ready. The match may begin!"
The referee, unable to bear watching them bicker anymore, coughed and waved both flags to officially start the battle.
"You bastard! Go, Dragonite! Show them what you've got! Thunder Punch! Let's go!!"
"Rooaaar!!"
With Lance's embarrassed but forceful command, Dragonite clenched both fists and let out a powerful roar. Its small wings flapped rapidly, and its stout body shot into the air like a missile.
It drew a graceful arc in midair, electricity surging around its claws, and then dove straight toward Arbok.
"Arbok, Sludge Bomb! Now!"
"Chaa!"
Liam's lips curled into a faint smile as he quickly issued his command.
Arbok opened its maw wide, and a ball of muddy, brown sludge shot out toward the incoming Dragonite.
"Roooaaar..."
Seeing the incoming Sludge Bomb, a flicker of disdain flashed in Dragonite's eyes. With just a subtle flap of its wings, it changed its flight path mid-air, easily dodging the attack.
"Rooaaar!!"
Dragonite continued its dive and, in the next instant, appeared right in front of Arbok. Its electrified right fist shot up and smashed violently onto Arbok's head.
"Chaaaarbok!!"
That punch was fierce—so much so that Arbok, despite being bulkier than a typical Arbok, was knocked sliding backward across the battlefield.
It finally came to a stop after being dragged quite a distance. Arbok shook its aching head and locked eyes with Dragonite, now much more serious than before.
"Arbok, Glare! Don't let it get away!"
"Chaaa!!"
"Dragonite, take to the air and dodge!"
"Rooaaar!!"
As Liam's command rang out, Arbok's eerie pattern on its chest lit up with a sinister glow. But Lance, quick on the draw, had already ordered Dragonite to ascend. Dragonite immediately flapped its wings and soared upward.
"Dragonite! Now! Use Dragon Dance!"
"Roooaaar!!!"
While flying in the air, Dragonite's whole body surged with bluish-purple energy. It let out a sharp dragon's cry, and its presence intensified significantly.
"Dragonite! Follow up with Dragon Rush!!"
"Roooaaarrrr!!"
As soon as it finished the Dragon Dance, Dragonite leaned its body back and unleashed an even stronger surge of dragon energy. A ferocious dragon-shaped aura formed around its body as it became a meteor of destruction, diving toward Arbok.
"Perfect timing! Arbok! Use Haze! Then dig underground!"
"Chaa!!"
A thick black mist spewed from Arbok's mouth, quickly blanketing half the field in seconds. Then, Arbok's silhouette vanished into the darkness.
"Roooaaar!!!"
Dragonite, cloaked in draconic energy, plunged straight into the Haze without hesitation. A loud crash echoed out as it collided with the ground, followed by a pained roar from within the mist.
"Dragonite! Use Twister! Blow the mist away!"
"Rooaaar!"
Whuuush! Whuuush!
Hearing Dragonite's cry, Lance shouted into the mist.
Dragonite responded, flapping its wings powerfully. A fierce Twister quickly formed and swept across the battlefield. Within seconds, the dense black mist was completely blown away.
"Draaaa..."
Although the Haze was gone, the battlefield now only had a gaping hole where Arbok had burrowed into the ground. Dragonite also seemed a bit off—its previously boosted momentum was now completely gone, as if it had reset to its base form.
"Now's our chance! Grab it, Arbok!"
"Chaaa!!"
The moment the field cleared, Liam's eyes sharpened, and he yelled at the hole. Right on cue, the ground behind Dragonite exploded open. Arbok burst forth with a fierce glare, lunging straight for Dragonite.
"Dragonite! Wing Attack, then ascend! Follow up with another Dragon Dance!"
"Rooaaar!!"
Without even turning around, Dragonite's wings suddenly lit up with a silvery glow. It flapped twice, unleashing two crescent-shaped waves of light that struck Arbok mid-pounce, halting its attack.
Then, Dragonite pushed off the ground and soared back into the sky. Another Dragon Dance was already underway.
Seeing Dragonite floating high above and once again boosted, Lance let out a breath of relief and turned to Liam.
"Your Haze cleared away all of Dragonite's boosted stats from before. That sudden power shift threw Dragonite off-balance—almost letting you land a sneak attack. But that trick won't work again!"
"Dragonite! Use Agility, close the gap! Then Body Slam!"
"Rooaaar!"
Boosted once more, Dragonite's form blurred and disappeared from sight. Arbok, who was still focused on the sky, suddenly sensed danger and tried to coil defensively. But the next moment, its tail was grabbed tightly.
Then came a monstrous force—Arbok was hurled through the air and smashed violently onto the ground. But the attack didn't end there.
With another painful cry, Arbok was yanked up again and spun multiple times in midair. It felt as though its bones were coming apart before it was thrown across the field, skidding to a painful stop.
"Arbok!!"
Liam hadn't expected Dragonite's attack to be this fast or this brutal. In the blink of an eye, Arbok had taken a massive beating. It really lived up to Dragonite's name—with speed and strength that didn't match its bulky frame.
"Dragonite! Finish it—Hyper Beam!!"
"Rooaaar!!!"
Seeing Arbok collapsed on the ground, Lance wasted no time ordering the final strike.
"ROOOOAAAAHHH!!"
Dragonite stomped forward, opened its round mouth, and began charging a glowing golden beam.
"Return, Arbok!!!"
Seeing the situation on the field, Liam could only sigh and withdraw Arbok. A beam of red light returned it safely into its PokeBall.
Seeing this, Dragonite narrowed its eyes slightly, then suddenly lifted its head—and the powerful Hyper Beam shot skyward, piercing through the clouds.
"A wise choice. If you'd forced your Arbok to stay, I might've started to look down on you a little."
Lance nodded in approval as he addressed Liam.
"Heh, I'd never let my Pokémon take pointless damage. And now that your Dragonite used Hyper Beam, it's in its recharge state. I'm not about to waste that chance! Time to see my Dragon-type Pokémon!"
"Let's go, Garchomp! I choose you!"
"ROOARRR!!"
