Tyranitar was already directly in front of Magmortar and was about to strike with Giga Impact—an attack the latter couldn't possibly dodge.

Magmortar had already been struck by Earthquake and Stone Edge, and although both attacks had been weakened, it wasn't feeling well at this moment.

If it took a direct hit from Tyranitar's Giga Impact now, severe injury was inevitable—it might even be knocked out completely.

However...

"Eddie, you truly are formidable, but I won't surrender!"

"Magmortar! Full power—use Hyper Beam!!"

Magmortar's eyes narrowed upon hearing the command. Then, as if steeling itself with courage, it roared.

Just before Tyranitar could slam into it, Magmortar gathered all the energy within its body, opened its mouth, and fired a dazzling beam of light at the pseudo-legendary that was now right in front of it.

Magmortar's greatest strength lay in its flames that could reach temperatures of 2000 degrees, but fire-based attacks had minimal effect on Tyranitar. So at this critical moment, Blaine chose Hyper Beam instead.

Blaine knew that Magmortar was going to lose this battle and leave the field, but regardless of the outcome, before departing, it needed to weaken Tyranitar.

After all, Tyranitar—a pseudo-legendary that wasn't vulnerable to Fire-type moves—had far too much of an advantage against Blaine's team. If he didn't weaken it now, would he still have any dignity left if Tyranitar swept through all three of his remaining Pokémon?

"Roar!!!"

"Roar!!!"

"BOOM!!!"

The two massive Pokémon roared continuously as Tyranitar's body collided with Magmortar, sending the latter flying backward a considerable distance.

However, Blaine had already given the order to launch Hyper Beam, and Magmortar used the very last of its strength to continue controlling the powerful beam before its consciousness faded. It successfully struck Tyranitar with the attack.

After all, Tyranitar had just used Giga Impact. Although it was a pseudo-legendary at Gym Leader level, which greatly reduced the move's typical side effects...

No matter how much those effects were diminished, some movement slowdown was inevitable. Combined with Magmortar attacking at point-blank range, getting hit was practically unavoidable.

"Roar!!!"

Tyranitar was struck by the energy beam and roared in pain, its body staggering back several steps.

However, that was the extent of it. Tyranitar was indeed injured, but a single Hyper Beam couldn't take it down. It still possessed the strength to continue battling.

On the other side, after confirming that its attack had hit its target, Magmortar seemed to have fulfilled its mission. It no longer resisted and collapsed to the ground, losing consciousness.

"Ding! Charizard gained experience! Level increased by 1, now at level 64!"

"Ding! Dragonair and Dragonair gained experience! Level increased by 1, now at level 62!"

"Finally leveled up. There are still two more Pokémon to battle. I should be able to reach level 65."

Eddie thought to himself after hearing the game's electronic notification.

"Thank you for your efforts, Magmortar."

On the opposite side, Blaine recalled Magmortar and looked at Tyranitar. Although the latter had been injured after taking that Hyper Beam, it still appeared fierce and maintained an attitude of "I can still fight ten more battles."

"Even a Hyper Beam wasn't enough with just one hit. Judging from your condition, Tyranitar, it seems like you'd need to be hit two or three times. The title of pseudo-legendary is truly well-deserved."

Blaine sighed. Tyranitar's strength really wasn't exaggerated.

What kind of move was Hyper Beam? Among Normal-type moves, aside from Self-Destruct and Explosion, it was among the strongest alongside Giga Impact.

Such a powerful ultimate move also came with significant side effects. If an ordinary Pokémon was hit by this move, even if it wasn't knocked out instantly, it should have been critically injured—because the power of this move was simply that tremendous.

But look at Tyranitar. It had taken a direct hit from such a powerful Hyper Beam. Although it appeared somewhat injured, it was still brimming with fighting spirit and looked like it could withstand several more Hyper Beams.

Monstrous! Although Tyranitar was a Pokémon and not a human, deep down in Blaine's heart, he wanted to shout that very word: Monstrous!

"Very well, since Tyranitar is this powerful, I'll have to go all out."

Blaine said this, then retrieved a pair of gloves from his researcher coat and put them on.

"Oh~~ Blaine, this is only your fourth Pokémon and you're already going to Mega Evolve?"

Seeing this, Eddie also took out his Mega Glove and put it on while playfully teasing Blaine.

"I can't help it. I wanted to save this for my fifth Pokémon, but Eddie, you're simply too strong. I have no choice."

"By the way, I'm planning to use Pokémon capable of Mega Evolution for both my fourth and fifth slots, so you'd better stay alert, Eddie."

Blaine didn't hide anything and frankly admitted that Eddie was too formidable. If he didn't use Mega Evolution now, he'd probably continue getting overwhelmed.

After putting on his gloves, he retrieved a Poké Ball and threw it forcefully.

"This battle is up to you—Houndoom!"

"Howl!!!"

A black canine Pokémon appeared on the field and immediately released a terrifying howl, as if demonstrating just how fearsome it was.

"Stop howling and let's Mega Evolve first!"

Blaine was somewhat exasperated. Houndoom howled loudly every single time it entered battle—it seemed uncomfortable if it didn't announce its presence.

Houndoom ceased its howling upon hearing the command, then responded to the Keystone on Blaine's glove, emitting a brilliant light.

"I was originally planning to use Lucario against Dark-type Pokémon, but Houndoom is a Dark and Fire dual-type, which means it can also counter Lucario's Fighting and Steel typing."

When Eddie saw Houndoom appear, he briefly considered Lucario, but as he noted, the two sides would essentially counter each other. It was better to let Tyranitar continue the battle.

"Tyranitar! Let's begin as well! Mega Evolution!!"

"Roar!!!"

Eddie extended his right hand wearing the Mega Glove, and Tyranitar responded to Eddie's call, emitting the same dazzling light.

Both sides initiated Mega Evolution simultaneously, and their Pokémon gradually transformed within the brilliant glow.

"Roar!!!"

"Howl!!!"

The moment Mega Evolution completed, both Mega Tyranitar and Mega Houndoom roared at each other.

Both possessed the Dark-type. They both displayed menacing grins, ready to beat each other senseless as a form of friendship between Dark-types.
