"I remember how blue his body looked, how they tried to perform CPR on him but it was too late. Zahi was broken, his parents were so destraught I didn't think his father would make it past the year. Mama blamed herself so much, if she hadn't taken Rocco maybe he would be alive. She never let me go close to the water after that, never let me swim or venture off on the beach alone.
"It wasn't like I wanted too. I was too traumatized to even try and that's why I never really learned how to swim. Zahi worked hard to get to America, he wanted to honor Rocco's memory and take his parents out of that. Take them away from where we had lost him and when he made it, it was such a huge accomplishment. Our entire family thought it would be best if I left first. I had the best chance of being successful to them and I took their trust and delivered.
