Chapter 44 - 13."She"

The Persistent Echo of "She"

Elisa couldn't shake the memory of Felix's hushed, strained voice in the cafe, the urgent command to "make sure she doesn't find out." The puppy rescue, the art studio conversation, and even the Thorne family dinner had softened her perception of Felix, but this lingering mystery remained a sharp, unsettling edge. It was a secret he guarded fiercely, something that clearly caused him immense stress.

Her mind often replayed his words: "This isn't some petty scandal. It's... complicated. And no, I haven't forgotten about that. It's precisely because of that I need to be careful." The "that" sounded like a past event, something significant and possibly damaging, directly linked to this elusive "she."

Was "she" a secret romantic entanglement from his past, a relationship that could jeopardize his family's plans for him? Or perhaps a family member, someone vulnerable or deeply involved in the Thorne family's intricate web of power and secrets? The image of Felix, usually so composed and arrogant, looking genuinely vulnerable during that call, suggested a profound personal stake. It wasn't just about his family's reputation; it was about protecting her, whoever she was. The ambiguity was tantalizing, hinting at a hidden side of Felix that went beyond the public persona of the powerful, privileged heir.

Advancing the Plot: An Unforeseen Crisis

The relative peace that had settled between Elisa and Felix, along with the blossoming romance between Caleb and Seraphina, was abruptly shattered. News spread like wildfire across campus: the Thorne Family Arts Foundation, the very entity funding Elisa's scholarship, was facing a major public relations crisis.

Rumors swirled, fueled by whispers and vague online articles from less reputable news outlets. There were accusations of questionable financial dealings within a subsidiary company, and worse, hints of unethical labor practices in some of their overseas manufacturing facilities. While the articles didn't directly name anyone, the implications were clear. The Thorne name, usually synonymous with impenetrable wealth and philanthropy, was being dragged through the mud.

For Elisa, the news was a gut punch. Her scholarship, her future, was now tied to a potentially disgraced foundation. The earlier fears of being a "PR move" resurfaced, albeit differently. Would the scholarship be revoked? Would her association with the Thornes now taint her own burgeoning artistic career?

Felix, predictably, disappeared from campus life. He missed classes, wasn't seen at badminton practice, and his usual spot in the library remained empty. Caleb looked visibly strained, often on his phone, and even Seraphina, usually so vibrant, seemed subdued, her brow furrowed with worry. The "public mess" Felix had feared, the one that transcended a mere car accident, was unfolding on a much grander, more terrifying scale. And this time, it threatened to engulf not just Felix, but everyone connected to the Thorne name, including Elisa.

Felix wasn't physically on campus, but his presence, or rather, his absence, was palpable. He was clearly entrenched in the eye of the storm.

One evening, Elisa was walking near the administration building, past the imposing glass and steel structure that housed many of the university's more exclusive offices and a few high-level meeting rooms. She heard raised voices from an open window on the ground floor. The voice was unmistakable: Felix's father, loud and authoritative.

"...utter incompetence! This cannot be traced back to us, do you understand, Felix? The foundation must remain untainted. Our legacy is at stake!"

Then, Felix's voice, sharper, more strained than she'd ever heard it. "I'm doing everything I can, Father! But cutting off funding to the very programs we publicly champion now will look even worse! And it won't fix the core issue!"

"The core issue is a public image problem, Felix! Nothing more! This needs to be contained. And the Thorne Legacy Project, it's on hold. Indefinitely."

Elisa stopped dead in her tracks. The Thorne Legacy Project. She'd heard whispers of it – Felix's father's pet project, something Felix himself was supposedly being groomed to oversee, meant to cement their family's benevolent image for generations. To hear it was "on hold, indefinitely" spoke volumes about the severity of the crisis. Felix sounded desperate, almost pleading, a far cry from his usual detached arrogance. He was clearly caught between managing the fallout and possibly disagreeing with his father's ruthless tactics. The weight of his family's empire was clearly crushing him.

The campus paper, usually mild and focused on student life, had suddenly become an investigative hub. The shift was primarily driven by one ambitious student: Daniel Vance.

Daniel was a journalism major in his final year, with an intense, almost predatory, glint in his eye and a reputation for sniffing out a story. He was tall, lanky, with a shock of messy brown hair he constantly pushed out of his face, and he seemed to exist on a diet of stale coffee and breaking news. Unlike the intern who had leaked the previous article, Daniel was methodical, tenacious, and genuinely believed in "speaking truth to power." He saw the Thorne Foundation scandal as his big break, a chance to expose the hypocrisy of the elite.

Elisa first encountered him in the library. She was trying to read, but he was loudly conducting an interview nearby with a student who worked for the Thorne Foundation's campus outreach program. Daniel's questions were sharp, probing, skirting the edge of accusation. He was determined to dig deeper, to find the human cost behind the financial headlines. He embodied a different kind of drive than Felix, one fueled by journalistic ambition rather than familial obligation, but equally relentless. His presence on campus meant that the Thorne crisis wouldn't just be handled quietly behind closed doors; it would be scrutinized, challenged, and potentially laid bare for everyone to see.
