The morning light crept softly through the pale curtains, filtering in thin streaks that brushed against the sheets. Lynn stirred, her hand instinctively reaching out across the bed searching for warmth that wasn't there.
The space beside her was empty.
Her brow furrowed faintly, sleep fading from her eyes as she pushed herself up. The sheets were still slightly warm where Alex had been, but already cooling. He rarely left the bed before her, not without saying something first. Especially now.
She rubbed her eyes and glanced toward the clock on the nightstand, it was just past six. Early, even for him.
Then she heard him.
At first, it was only a murmur. It was low, clipped words drifting through the half-open balcony door. But then his tone sharpened, and Lynn froze.
"…don't tell me you lost her."
Her heart jumped.
