The reality of our situation hit like a punch to the gut—we were in deep trouble, and there was no sugar-coating it. Sure, this rooftop felt like the safest spot we could find right now, but it was also turning into our prison. We were completely boxed in up here. Going down wasn't an option, escaping seemed impossible, and if we just sat here twiddling our thumbs much longer, the third day would roll around. When that happened, more vampires would crawl out of their hiding spots—the really nasty ones, the high-class predators that would turn our slim chances of making it out alive into practically nothing.
