Thunder roared through the air as Zeraora's Thunderbolt struck with urgent intensity. Milotic's Aqua Ring formed a protective barrier around its elegant body, creating a shimmering water shield to deflect the electric assault.
The brilliant white lightning pierced through the aquatic defense, causing countless water droplets to burst and scatter in all directions. It was clear that Milotic had mastered the Aqua Ring technique to perfection.
While most Pokemon use Aqua Ring simply as a move to gradually restore stamina, Wallace's Milotic had transformed it into a powerful defensive technique. From what Chris could observe, its defensive capabilities rivaled those of standard protective moves—perhaps even surpassing them.
Furthermore, Chris suspected that Milotic could still benefit from Aqua Ring's original healing properties while maintaining the shield. It was a masterful combination of recovery and defense in a single move.
I need to remember this technique, Chris thought. Greninja should try learning this approach when we return home. It would give him both the recovery and defensive options he currently lacks.
However, despite Milotic's impressive use of Aqua Ring, the strategy seemed flawed against Zeraora's current position. Even if Milotic could block the Thunderbolt directly, it couldn't fly. Standing on the water's surface would still leave it vulnerable to electrical conduction damage.
There was no way Milotic could completely isolate itself from the thunder's devastating effects with just those protective water barriers beneath it.
In the next instant, lightning flashed across the battlefield. Electric sparks dove into the water, and countless white bolts of electricity danced across the pool's surface.
Chris folded his arms, watching Milotic with confidence. It's over.
"Boom!"
Suddenly, the water surrounding Milotic exploded outward like a blooming flower. The aquatic barrier pushed the surging electricity away in all directions, water droplets scattering everywhere.
The electric sparks connected with the flying water droplets, creating a dazzling light show across the entire battlefield. The scene resembled something from a Pokemon Contest performance rather than a serious battle.
Yet Milotic remained floating gracefully within the display, calm and composed. Not only had it avoided losing consciousness from electrical conduction, but it appeared completely unharmed by the attack.
"No damage?" Chris frowned, surprised by this unexpected development.
Several audience members seemed equally confused by what they had witnessed.
"What happened? How is Milotic not hurt?" Sidney's eyes widened in disbelief.
Glacia and Phoebe rested their chins thoughtfully, trying to understand the phenomenon they had just observed.
"Since Wallace became champion recently, you probably don't know much about his Pokemon," Drake said, stroking his snow-white beard. "I fought Wallace once before and tried to use Electric-type moves to exploit Water-type weaknesses. I encountered this exact same situation."
He paused, remembering the battle. "After our match ended, I asked him about it."
"Champion Wallace explained that his Milotic has achieved ultimate mastery over water manipulation. It can transform ordinary water into pure water, making it impossible for Electric-type moves to harm Milotic through conduction."
"Pure water? What's the difference between pure water and regular water?" Sidney asked, looking more confused than before.
"I told you not to skip classes when you were in school, but you never listened. Now you're paying for not studying," Phoebe laughed at his confusion.
"Pure water contains no impurities and has no freely moving ions or electrons, which means it cannot conduct electricity," Glacia explained patiently.
On the battlefield, Wallace seized the momentum after successfully defending against the attack.
"Milotic, use Twister!"
"Miiii~" Milotic released a melodic cry.
Three powerful waterspouts suddenly erupted from beneath the water's surface, spiraling upward toward the sky. They quickly surrounded Zeraora in a triangular formation, creating an impressive combination attack.
The technique blended Water-type and Dragon-type moves, dividing into three separate torrents before converging in a coordinated assault. The combined power was truly remarkable.
Chris paid little attention to the incoming Twister attack, still pondering the mystery of Milotic's immunity. He had formed some theories about why the Water-type Pokemon hadn't suffered conduction damage, but without confirmation, they remained mere speculation.
I'll ask Wallace about it after the battle, he decided. For now, it's time to end this match with overwhelming power.
Two minutes had passed since the last major attack, which meant Zapdos's Treasure was ready to activate again. The next offensive move would quadruple Zeraora's original attack power.
This would truly end the battle.
Chris reached into his pocket and withdrew a yellow prismatic crystal, pressing it firmly against his Z-Ring bracelet. The Electric-type Z-Crystal gleamed with stored energy.
"Z-Move: Gigavolt Havoc!"
Golden sparks poured from Chris's body, flowing through the air to merge with Zeraora hovering above the battlefield.
Instantly, brilliant white lightning erupted in a spectacular storm of electricity. The sky above the arena blazed like a second sun, so intensely bright that spectators could barely look directly at the overwhelming radiance.
Within that "artificial sunlight," Zeraora assumed a javelin-throwing stance. In its raised hand, chaotic lightning gradually condensed into solid form.
Normally, wild and violent electricity resisted control, especially when someone attempted to compress it into physical matter. Thunder and lightning represented pure, untamed force. Yet now, an incredible power forcibly shaped the electrical energy, creating a thunder javelin capable of piercing through anything.
In just a few heartbeats, the lightning javelin became completely solid and real.
Zeraora hurled the weapon with tremendous force.
A brief, sharp surge of electrical current filled the air.
Everyone present saw only a blur before their eyes. In the next moment, thunder exploded across the entire battlefield.
The water's surface became covered in dazzling lightning, transforming the arena's pool into what appeared to be a lake of pure electrical energy. The three waterspouts Milotic had created collapsed instantly when Zeraora released its javelin.
Above the electrified pool, Milotic hung suspended, pierced by the thunder javelin. Violent lightning tore through its consciousness almost immediately, while electrical sparks rampaged across its body unchecked. Complete unconsciousness was inevitable.
Neither Wallace nor his Pokemon had possessed enough time to react with either an attack or defensive maneuver.
"Zeraora, absorb the electricity!" Chris commanded suddenly.
With Zapdos's Treasure enhancing its power, Zeraora's Z-Move "Gigavolt Havoc" had reached a transcendent level. Even with the battle's safety mechanisms in place, Milotic might not survive the attack's full duration, and the lingering aftereffects could prove fatal.
Though this was a sanctioned match, Chris preferred avoiding unnecessary casualties.
With a sweeping gesture from Zeraora, the electrified pool returned to its master's body, and the collapsed javelin reformed and rejoined as well.
Zeraora, blessed with the "Volt Absorb" ability, comfortably reabsorbed all the electrical energy that belonged to it.
On the battlefield, Milotic floated limply, its body blackened and scorched from the intense electrical assault. A faint smell of burnt scales drifted through the air as the Water-type Pokemon slowly sank toward the pool's depths.
Wallace snapped out of his stunned trance, quickly grabbing Milotic's Poke Ball to recall his fallen partner.
The duel had reached its conclusion.
The referee's voice echoed across the arena: "Milotic is unable to battle! Zeraora wins! Since Trainer Wallace has no remaining Pokemon available, the final victor is Trainer Chris!"
