"At least seventy-two hours, possibly longer. We'll reassess then."
Li Feng nodded, following the surgeon through the sterile hallways to the intensive care unit, his shoes squeaking on the polished floor, the fluorescent lights too bright after hours in the dim waiting room. Everything felt surreal, like moving through a dream, or a nightmare he couldn't wake from.
They stopped outside a room with glass walls. Monitors were visible inside, a small army of medical equipment surrounding a single bed.
And in that bed....
The sight of Mu Yunchen lying there made Li Feng's chest constrict with grief and rage.
Pale. So pale his skin looked almost translucent under the harsh lights. Still. Completely still in a way that was fundamentally wrong for someone who was always moving, always working, always three steps ahead of everyone else.
