The first thing that Hazel did was to check on Ashlyn. She was whimpering, and her forehead was bleeding, but upon closer look, it was only a cut from the broken glass, which made Hazel feel a little bit of relief.
"Mama… hurt…" Ashlyn cried softly. She was trembling as she pressed her little face against Hazel's chest. "Ash scares…"
"It's okay, baby; it's okay… Mama is here." Hazel wanted to check on her more, but she didn't have time for that, because she could hear a few footsteps approaching the flipped car.
Hazel tried to move her legs; they were fine, though she felt a little stung. It must be because of the broken glass. She checked her arms. Her left shoulder was a little bit sore because of the impact earlier, but she could move both arms. The gun was still on her. There were only three bullets inside. She had to use it wisely.
