Aurora's eyelids fluttered as the world came into focus. The first thing she noticed was the steady beeping of a heart monitor, rhythmic and constant. Her body ached with deep, bone-weary pain, but she was alive.
Eighteen hours had passed since the warehouse incident. Since Kane had saved her. Pain medication had kept her unconscious through the night and into morning, but now consciousness was returning, slowly and painfully.
Her mind sorted fragments. " Hospital beeping. Antiseptic and white walls. Private room - Mirage Corp. They brought me here. Safe enough for now."
Pain was everywhere, deep and persistent. Every movement she made sent waves of agony through her body.
"Aurora."
She turned toward the voice. Kane sat in a chair beside her bed; his clothes still showed signs of the battle, blood stains and burn marks. His face was pale with exhaustion, but his eyes were locked on her.
