Chapter 89 - Part 88

The night felt endless as we sat in the dim light of the safe house, the flickering screens casting sharp shadows across our faces. Time was a luxury we couldn't afford anymore. The deeper we dug into Zenith, the more dangerous it became. Every piece of intel that Mara uncovered revealed a more complex web, and with each revelation, the hunger inside me continued to grow—darker, more insistent.

Alan and Mara were deep in their work, but I could feel the tension in the air. The longer we stayed on this path, the more it felt like a countdown to something inevitable. And the worst part? I could feel myself slipping further into the abyss, a part of me already embracing the chaos.

"Any progress?" I asked, breaking the silence.

Mara looked up briefly from her monitor, her face tight with frustration. "We're close. I'm tracing communication logs between the mole's contacts. One of them's a key player, but they've covered their tracks well. It's like they know we're coming."

I couldn't suppress the grin that tugged at my lips. "Of course they know. We're not exactly subtle, are we?"

Alan shot me a glance, his gaze sharp. "No. And they're getting more cautious. The more we pressure them, the more they'll tighten up. We need to make a decisive move."

I nodded, but the hunger inside me gnawed relentlessly, urging me to act, to tear through everything standing between me and the source of all this corruption. But I knew I couldn't give in—not yet. I had to stay focused. Zenith was the enemy, not my own impulses.

"We'll hit them hard," I said, my voice low, but with an edge of certainty. "We find their weak spot, and we exploit it. We make them come to us."

Mara hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "I agree. But there's more to this. We've been going after the surface. We need to find out who's pulling the strings from the shadows."

I could feel the pull of the hunger tightening its grip on my chest. It wanted me to abandon this carefully constructed plan, to go for the throat right now. But I held back, breathing through the pressure. Patience, I reminded myself. We would break them, but we had to do it right.

"Let's go through their contacts. If we can get close enough, we can take down their leaders," Alan suggested.

But even as he said it, I knew this wasn't just about their leaders. It was about something deeper. Something I couldn't ignore anymore.

"Start with the safehouses," I instructed. "Look for any connections to high-level figures within Zenith. If they're involved, they'll slip up eventually."

Mara typed rapidly, pulling up surveillance footage from various safehouses across the city. As she sifted through the information, her face grew more and more tense. I could sense that she was on the verge of discovering something big, and I couldn't wait for it.

Then, she froze, staring at the screen with wide eyes. "I found something... or someone. A name. Alaric Voss."

The name hit me like a punch to the gut. Voss. I had heard whispers of him before, a name that was always just beyond my reach. A shadow within Zenith, an enigma that even the most seasoned operatives feared. He was untouchable, a ghost in the system.

But now, it seemed, he had been careless.

"Who is he?" Alan asked, his voice low.

"Alaric Voss is... a senior operative in Zenith, but more importantly, he's the one with the connections. The key to everything. He's been in and out of the highest echelons of Zenith, and I think he's the one pulling the strings," Mara replied, her voice tight with disbelief.

I felt a rush of excitement mix with the hunger that was clawing at my insides. Finally, we were getting close to the source. But the closer we got, the harder it would be to control the monster inside me. I had to hold myself back. For now, at least.

"Where is he?" I asked, my voice almost a growl.

Mara scanned the screen, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "I'm tracking his last known location. It's... it's in a place we've already been before. The underground lab. They've been using it as a base of operations."

I felt a cold wave of recognition wash over me. The underground lab. The place where my nightmare had first taken shape, where my darkest desires had come to life. The lab that had been the source of so many of my twisted thoughts and impulses.

It wasn't just a location anymore. It was personal.

"We're going to finish this," I said, my voice steady, but the fire in my chest was beginning to burn hotter. "We'll take down Voss and everyone connected to him. This ends now."

Alan nodded, his face hard with determination. "No turning back. This time, we're not just going after the mole. We're going after the whole system."

I turned to Mara, my gaze intense. "Make sure we have everything we need. No surprises."

Mara didn't answer. She didn't need to. She was already diving back into the data, pulling up everything she could find about Voss and the lab's layout. I could hear her muttering to herself as she worked, but it was distant, almost as if she wasn't even there. The hunger had taken hold of me again, and this time, it was almost too strong to ignore.

I needed to move. I needed to tear through this world and reshape it. I wasn't just after Voss anymore. I was after everything he represented. Zenith, the people who had used me, manipulated me, and pushed me into this existence—I was going to bring it all crashing down.

The walls of the safe house seemed to close in around me, the weight of what I was about to do pressing against my chest. But I couldn't stop now. I wouldn't stop.

Not until I had consumed everything.
