Nick was frightened by Melody Sheffield's stern tone and started to cry, his tears falling almost instantaneously.
"What are you doing?" Mrs. Wilson couldn't stand it any longer. She understood that Melody blamed Nick because he wasn't a Wilson, transferring her resentment towards Timothy Grant onto Nick, not liking him. However, Melody was too grown-up to be bullying a child like this.
Feeling sorry for Nick, Mrs. Wilson picked him up and comforted him gently.
"Mom, you can't spoil him like this. He's still young and already learning to waste food. Who knows how he'll squander things when he grows up? It'll be too late to discipline him then."
