"Why give me hope like this, only to disappoint me time after time?"
Her voice cracked with emotion as she questioned him, the grievances buried deep in her heart pouring out in this moment. She needed him to tell her, to answer her—why?
Why did he have to treat her this way?
Ryan Gregory saw the shimmer of tears in her eyes, and his heart twisted painfully.
The sensation was sharp, like needles stabbing him—so excruciatingly real.
But what could he say...
Could he tell her it was all to keep her from suffering even greater harm?
Ryan Gregory couldn't bring himself to say it.
With furrowed brows, he said, "Sofia Hamilton, there are some things I can't explain to you right now."
"Then when will you be able to explain? Ten years later? Or twenty?"
Sofia curved her lips into a mocking smile. "If you had truly cared for me, you wouldn't have kept everything from me."
He kept everything to himself, making him even more unfathomable to her.
