Jayla quickly ended her phone call and turned to face Sarah. Her face looked scared for a moment, but then she tried to smile.
"Sarah!" she said, trying to sound normal. "I didn't hear you come upstairs."
Sarah stepped into the room, closing the door behind her. Her heart was beating very fast. She couldn't believe what she had just heard.
"Jayla," Sarah said slowly, "what did you just say on the phone?"
Jayla's smile became shaky. "Oh, that? It's not what you think it is. I was just—"
"You said you love Mason," Sarah interrupted, her voice getting louder. "You said you're going to make him yours."
"No, no, no," Jayla said quickly, shaking her head. "It's not what you think. I can explain everything."
Sarah stared at her, waiting for an explanation. But instead of explaining, Jayla suddenly started laughing. It was a strange, cold laugh that made Sarah feel uncomfortable.
"Wait," Jayla said, still laughing. "Were you waiting for me to apologize?"
