James Black stood at the doorway for a while before taking the marriage certificate back to the study. In the study, he stared at the marriage certificate for quite a while, still unable to guess what Jane Sampson had done with it.
He hid the marriage certificate back in its original place and locked it up again.
When he returned to the bedroom, Jane Sampson was bundled under the quilt, giggling softly and he had no idea what she was laughing about. James Black changed into his pajamas, lifted the quilt, and lay down, only to find Jane Sampson holding her mobile phone that was charging.
He picked up his mobile from the bedhead cabinet and saw there was a text message. He opened it to see that it was from Peter Gingery.
Brother, you got back very late. I won't come over to see Jane tonight.
