I smiled as Mommy walked into the dining hall. Was she going to join me today? Usually, I always ate alone or with Daddy at the big table. Thankfully, today, it was the latter.
Daddy glanced up at her and put his napkin on the table. "Joining us today, Eileen?" he asked, his voice warm but laced with the usual concern.
She took a seat opposite him and looked down at the food. "Yes, but only for a bit. I have to get going. It's busy being me."
Daddy glanced at me, and I noticed the frown on his face mirrored mine. Mommy rarely had time for me. It felt like the nannies were more like my mommies than she was. I wanted to be excited that she was here, but the thought of her leaving again made my heart sink.
"Mommy, can we do something together after lunch?" I asked, my voice hopeful yet timid.
