Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Interrogation

Arrested. It wasn't a word I ever thought would apply to me, yet there I stood, or rather sat, in the dimly lit room of the Forks police station. Handcuffs bound my wrists, a stark reminder that my presence in this world was fraught with unforeseen challenges.

Charlie Swan, the police chief himself, had taken charge of the situation. His stern expression offered no sympathy as he led me through the station's corridors, my every step echoing in the cold air. Now, seated in the interrogation room, I found myself alone with my thoughts, the weight of the situation pressing heavily upon me.

The room was Spartan, its bareness accentuated by the harsh fluorescent lighting that cast an almost clinical glow. A metal table stood between two chairs, an austere setting that spoke of its purpose. The window to my right, one-way and foreboding, felt like a portal into a world of uncertainty—much like the world I had found myself reborn into.

My gaze shifted to the handcuffs, a stark reminder of my vulnerability in this situation. They symbolized a lack of control, a restriction that ran deeper than mere physicality. With every passing second, the reality of my predicament settled in—an outsider in a place that held secrets I could only begin to fathom.

The sound of footsteps drew my attention, and Charlie Swan entered the room, his demeanor unchanged. He settled into the chair opposite me, his eyes fixed on mine with an intensity that sent a shiver down my spine. It was a gaze accustomed to sifting through the truth and uncovering hidden motives.

"Name?" His voice was gruff, businesslike, as he began the proceedings. The question was simple, and yet I knew it was just the tip of the iceberg—the first step into a labyrinth of unknowns.

"Warden Schüttmann," I replied, my voice steady despite the tumultuous thoughts racing through my mind.

Charlie nodded, his eyes narrowing ever so slightly. "You were found in possession of items that suggested a confrontation of some sort," he stated, his gaze unwavering. "Care to explain?"

I cleared my throat, feeling the weight of my words as I spoke. "I was—unprepared for my arrival in this world," I admitted, choosing my words carefully. "I had to defend myself against a wild animal."

His eyes held mine, searching for any signs of deception. "A wild animal," he repeated, skepticism evident in his tone. "And where did this encounter take place?"

"In the woods, not far from here," I answered, my gaze drifting to the window. The forest had been both my adversary and my provider, a paradox that mirrored the complexities of my situation.

Charlie leaned back, studying me with an inscrutable expression. "You're new to Forks, aren't you?" he asked, his tone softening slightly.

I nodded, feeling a twinge of vulnerability. "Yes, I am."

His gaze held a certain curiosity now, a glimmer of understanding that seemed to temper his skepticism. "Well, Warden Schüttmann, it looks like we have a lot to talk about." He rose from his chair, his movements deliberate. "We'll start with the basics, and then we'll delve into the specifics of your—arrival."

As he exited the room, leaving me alone once again, I felt a mixture of emotions—apprehension, curiosity, and a growing determination to navigate this unfamiliar terrain. The one-way window seemed like a metaphor for the knowledge that lay beyond my reach, for the secrets of this world that were just beyond my grasp.

I took a deep breath, steeling myself for the conversation that lay ahead. My encounter with the mountain lion had been a challenge, but it was only the beginning. As I sat there, awaiting the next step in this unexpected journey, I couldn't help but wonder how the events would unfold, and how they would shape my place in this world.
