Chapter 36 - ch. 36 Traitor in their midst?

Surrounding a burning car that they themselves had lit, all of the vampires looked at it with hatred in their eyes.

The car's fire raged on but sat upon the roof of the car were five burning head, they'd been burnt to a charred crisp making their faces undiscernible but unmistakable fangs could be seen in their mouth.

"Who dares to defile our brothers and sisters in such a manner!" The leader of this coven of vampires shouted angrily in Latin.

"This can't have been the work of humans... This can only mean thing... There is a traitor amongst us, someone who works for a rival coven had to have done this!"

While these vampire's species were primitive compared to the normal vampires Nick read about, they were still intelligent and had lived a lot longer than most beings on the planet.

Each of these vampires were rich, they had turned dozens of major companies CEOs into their thralls that listen to their every command.

They each live in their own separate mansions and could order as many blood bags as they wanted from their underground connections, but this was boring for the vampire.

The reason they came to Barrows Alaska was actually for the same reason as Nick, this was their hunting vacation! They wanted to relive their memories and feel the nostalgia of hunting down humans once again, to feel their fresh warm blood splatter onto their cold body.

It was with the invention of the musket that vampires began to feel fear towards the humans, it would take over a hundred people to be able to kill a vampire but they still killed them nonetheless with their cannons and muskets.

With each new weapon humanity created the further they drove the vampires into a corner, it was when humans first created the flame thrower that the vampires went into hiding. This invention completely leveled the playing field, with a flamethrower a single skilled human could slay a vampire.

It's been over a hundred years since these vampire had truly let loose, devouring and slaughtering humans wantonly like it was the fifteen hundred again. It was all fun and game to them... Until they watched their coven mates skull get turned to charcoal.

The vampires had a shouting match, accusing one another of being a traitor in their Latin tongue.

"Silence!" The leader of the coven, a menacing aristocratic looking vampire with a pale complexion and sharp features screeched out.

"A single person couldn't possibly have killed all five of them, this can only mean there are multiple traitors here! Since they are still hiding, the traitors are outnumbered and afraid of attacking out in the open." The Coven leader spoke with such confidence that they all believe him completely, even though he couldn't be further from the truth.

"And so... I shall call this vacation off! Take what remains from our fallen as evidence, we'll immediately go back to the meeting house and sort out who the true traitors are!"

"What about the remaining humans! They'll tell the world about us! They will believe in vampires again and we'll be hunted down like centuries ago!"

"I agree with Virgil! We need to at least follow through with the plan of using the humans pipeline of oil to remove all traces of our presence!" All the Vampires nodded their bloody heads at this sentiment, only for the leader to shake his head in melancholy.

"The humans already know about our existence..." The leaders words shocked the rest of the coven into complete silence.

"The human Governments already know about vampires! The only reason we're not being actively hunted is because other creatures are higher up on their list! I organized this vacation as it's probably the last one we'll ever have..." This realization set in with all of the vampires.

Their leader was always the cautious type so them attacking an entire town of humans was very out of character for him. But if the humans already know about their existences...

With modern weapons the Vampires stood no chance, they'd be wiped out completely!

"All of the covens around America are talking together... There's serious discussions about merge together as one super coven, all to strengthen ourselves before the inevitable clash with the humans."

Shock appeared in the eyes of the vampires, this knowledge the leader divulged was probably the most significant thing they've heard of in their entire lives!

"It doesn't matter if the humans find out about this but what does matters most is that there is traitors in our midst! They either work with a rival Coven or even worse, with the humans! We leave now! Retrieve their bodies and skull!" The leaders words awoke them from this world breaking knowledge.

They opened their mouths to speak, to learn more about the inevitable war against the humans, but quickly clamped their mouths shut. They realized their leader was being so secretive on this matter because of the traitor among them, so asking for information would make them look suspicious!

So without any discussion or inquiries, the coven of vampires followed their leaders command and retrieve the bodies and skulls of the dead vampire and set off towards the ship.

Their minds were full of hateful thoughts towards this traitor but that didn't stiffle the secret exctitment they had about this war against the humans, even if they acted like it was terrible it still excited them knowing they'd eventually be able to slaughter humans out in the open once again.

This was their chance to switch their positions, to stop cowering in fear, to finally enslave humanity as a whole!

"Where the hell are they going?" Nick watched from a rooftop as the vampires picked up the bodies and ran away.

Nick purposely put the vampire bodies in such a strange position to attract them, allowing him to count all of the vampires and properly plan against them.

Nick counted nineteen vampires in total, he knew he could take them if he fought one on one but if three or more attacking him at once, it would be over for him.

Nick was planning on making traps and using gorilla warfare to wittle down the number of vampires but before he could even fully flesh out his plan, the vampires decided to retreat from the town!

Nick followed them with his eyes but didn't move after them, he didn't know what the Vampires were doing but it could be a trap to lure him in and kill him. He sat on the rooftop for hours scanning the now desolate and empty town, it was only when he reactivated his bear smell that he relaxed slightly and got off the roof.

He no longer smelt the overwhelming stench of rot and decay that surrounded the vampires, meaning they had actually left the town and retreated!

'I guess these vampires were a lot more cowardly than I had thought, they hunt humans down with no remorse but just seeing a couple of their own dead and they immediately mounted a full retreat. They are pathetic!' Nick couldn't possibly of known about the internal strife he'd accidentally cause in the vampires.

As he walked through the town, the bodies of mauled humans were littered around everywhere. Al of their blood was drained from their body and they had several injuries on them, like they had been tortured to death. Nick's eyes were a mixture of fury, sadness and relief at this situation.

He was sad at the needless death, furious at the vampires for such a despicable act, but he was also secretly relieved he didn't have to deal with a mob of vampires alone.

The overwhelming iron stench of blood filled his nostril alongside all of the other smells that came with the town, but besides that he could also smell a few people!

The stench of body odor and sweat could be smelt from a few locations, Nick didn't dare approach them as the chances of him getting shot would be quite high. Instead he headed towards the grocery store.

He wanted to grab a couple bottles of liquor and drown out his feeling but knew that would be incredibly stupid given the situation, instead he loaded up one of the stores baskets with food and magazines.

With grocies and entertainment in hand, Nick climbed the tallest building in the town which was the town hall of Barrows Alaska. It was three stories high and had a flat roof.

Nick tossed his grocies down and laid on the snowy roof, most of his clothes had been torn from the Bear Body transformation but the snow actually felt soothing even though a lot of it was touching his bare chest.

Turning on a gas powered lantern and grabbing a magazine, Nick started reading as he snacking on some chips and read the latest gossip.

If Nick was stuck out here for who knows how long until outside help arrives, he might as well enjoy his vacation the best he can.
