CHAPTER START---
While Oberon is focusing his Magic Energy to demonstrate his new Spell, Gildarts and the others explain the effects of Invasive Magics on Oberon.
"That explains a lot," Makarov says as he takes a sip of his freshly poured drink. "Still does leave one question thought. Cosmic clashes with the Magic Energy that tries to reach him."
"What do you mean?" Wakaba asks.
"I've felt it too," Gildarts says. "When Oberon gets excited and stops restraining his raw Magic Energy, it pours out like a broken dam. But unlike most people, who exude neutral Magic Energy. For him, even his leaking Magic Energy is Cosmic. As some kind of innate defense, our Magic Energy pours out of us to clash with it.
That's part of why a lot of people, even if they're strong, can't fight him. People who rely too heavily on intricate Spells will have those very Spells broken if he unleashes that raw Magic Energy."
Laxus looks over at his grandfather. "What does that even mean?"
"It means a battle against Oberon will always come down to a fist fight. For example. If you throw a bolt of lightning at him, and instead of using his Barrier he unleashes his raw Magic Energy. He'll saturate the air and force your bolt to break apart under the stress.
The only way to overcome it is to compete through sheer volume. Which is no easy feat. And even if you could do that, you'd have to strengthen your spells by increasing their integrity and density. All while he's trying to punch you in the face."
"A hopeless situation," Gildarts says. "Your Magic Energy will be unconsciously flowing out of you as a desperate defensive measure. Like an animal that's drowning instinctively tries to swim and breath, which will only make them drown faster. It takes advantage of a innate instinct in all things."
"Then should be be using it more?" Macao asks. "Seems like a easy win card in most fights. After all, not many people can compete with the sheer volume of his Magic Energy."
"His Magic Energy is not only a threat to Spells and Magics, but to the environment as well," Makarov says. "He has so much of it that he has to constantly restrain it. Unlike everyone else who much focus to bring it into the world, he has to spend his focus holding it in. If he opens that dam it could spill out forever, and when all Magic Energy is spent…"
They all adopt the same grim expression, knowing that to lose Magic Energy is to lose your life force.
"Definitely not something he should do," Gildarts says before raising his voice and calling out to Oberon. "Any minute now."
"Quiet," Oberon says as he brings his hands together in front of him, cupping the air between them as if holding a basketball. "This is really hard to do, give me a moment."
Wakaba chuckles. "It's kinda nice seeing Oberon not instantly master a Magic. Almost like the universe isn't playing favourites with him anymore."
"I'll drink to that," Macao empties his glass and refills it.
A minute later, Oberon's Magic Energy begins to flow toward his hands, and within the clearing a gently breeze forms, pulling toward him.
Gildarts sets down his drink, focused on Oberon. "I may not be able to sense his Magic Energy, but, Master—"
"I know, just be ready."
Oberon continues to gather Magic Energy into his spell, and the density of it causes him to sink into the dirt. The ground begins splitting apart, and the winds storm around them, pushing leaves and dust toward him as a mass of void black Magic Energy forms between his hands.
"Master!" Gildarts yells out, but Makarov only steps in front of them and raises a hand, signalling for Gildarts to wait a while longer.
"It's not the Black Hole Spell. It's something else," Makarov says.
"That's a lot less comforting!" Macao says over the raging winds.
Oberon sinks ankle deep into the ground, as the weight of his spell pulls him toward the earth, forcing him to his knees while ripping away his Magic Energy.
A moment later, Macao, Wakaba, and Laxus begin sliding forward, and Makarov enlarges his right hand to grip them while digging his enlarged left hand into the ground, anchoring them all in place.
"That's Gravity, but what about—" Makarov's words die in his throat as a golden light manifests and wraps around the gravitational spell like a ring, causing it to shine like a true event horizon.
However, the instant it does, Oberon loses consciousness, causing the Spell to destabilize.
It shatters as he falls backward, exploding with such violent force it forms a 30m -90ft- wide crater in the battlefield.
Wakaba, Macao, and Laxus struggle to regain their senses as the blinding light and concussive shockwave overwhelm them. But after some time they manage to stand, looking out at the massive crater. They notice that the battlefield was farther away, and in the moment leading to the Spell collapsing, Master Makarov moved them back to the treeline.
And on to other side of the crater, Gildarts stands with the unconscious Oberon slung over his shoulder, having moved fast enough to grab the boy and get them away from the Spell before it exploded.
Looking back at the crater, Gildarts is both impressed and confused. He makes his way over to the others as they're still recovering from the concussive effects of the Spell, with Oberon on his shoulder.
"This doesn't make much sense." Gildarts says. "This kind has almost as much Magic Energy as me. If all of it was in that Spell, it should have been enough to crater a lot more than this little place."
Makarov nods, observing the fine dust coating the crater. "What a strange attack. But you're right. That attack lost most of its Magic Energy when it became unstable. Can't you taste it in the air?"
The other share confused glances before focusing their senses, then finally notice the tingling sensation dancing across their skin. "Is that from him?"
"Cosmic releases that much raw Magic Energy that when defused back into Ethernano in the environment, we can actually feel it. Wizards use Ethernano internally to make Magic Energy, so we're fine. But this is dangerous for regular humans and animals. It would be like standing in a toxic environment, and they likely wouldn't notice until their organs start failing."
"Good thing we didn't do this in Magnolia," Macao sighs. "When we get back I'll tell the mayor to put out a notice. And I'll do daily check ups on this area until its safe. Can't have any hunters wandering into this place."
"Have Reedus come mark the area too," Makarov says. "Now lets head back…"
An hour later, Oberon wakes up on the couch in Master Makarov's office, feeling like his head is split in two, stomach demanding food. "Ah, damn it." He sits up and squeezes his eyes shut, desperate to relieve the pain.
"How are you feeling?" Makarov asks from behind his desk, sorting out the usual paperwork.
"Loud," Oberon mutters.
"Mhm. Same result, but I don't think my usual hangover cure will work here," Makarov says before walking over to the couches and sitting opposite Oberon. "How are you feeling?"
"Tired, hungry. Is everyone alright?"
"Yes. But I am curious about how you intended to survive the explosion."
"I mean…last time it hurt, a lot, but I healed up just before I got back to the Guild."
"Which means you were hurt for two weeks," Makarov shakes his head. "Such a blockhead. But I'm glad you were smart enough to wait for me before performing that Spell."
"Yeah. So, any ideas?"
"Cosmic is a new Magic, so my advice is very limited."
"But?"
"But, from the looks of it. The strange properties of Cosmic make it very powerful and dangerous. I recommend mastering Light and Gravity even more, and making Cosmic variations of Light Magic Spells before you try that particular Spell again.
From the looks of it, that was an advanced form of the Black Hole Spell. Which is extremely forbidden. The Magic Council holds Grimoires with guidance on that Spell under lock and key for a reason. But I'm sure you'll figure it out eventually, so only use it when absolutely necessary."
"Yeah I don't really have much of a choice either way. I can fight with Gravity or Light Magic all day, assuming I don't have to heal. But the moment I use anything more than the basic Cosmic Barrier, it feels like my Magic Energy can't refill fast enough."
Makarov strokes his chin. "That explains why your Magic Energy Container is so large. If Cosmic takes that much, then it really doesn't allow you to do much. Breaking it into Gravity and Light was simply more efficient. After all I doubt many people would require a Cosmic Spell variation to bring down. The power increase is horrific, even for me."
"I could use the Radiance Formula as a guideline and practice with it like that."
"Yes I was going to recommend as much. But this is something you'll have to figure out on your own. And as for that Spell you tried earlier. Well it appears to be a more advanced form of the Black Hole Spell, seeing that it was far more focused and contained, not to mention there was Light Magic mixed in. Don't do that without my supervision, understood?"
"Yes, Master Makarov."
"Good, now Macao should be done quarantining that area, get some food before the meeting."
Oberon gives the man a confused look. "What are you talking about, what area?"
