Ivan's POV
I woke up from my bed lazily and headed straight to my laptop to check my mails. It was that time of the year when colleges start issuing interview messages to qualified applicants. I opened my laptop and there was two new mails, one from Boston and another one from NYC. My heart started racing as I clicked to open the mail, opening the one from Boston first.
"Good day mr. Ivan Smith, you have qualified to attend an interview at Boston college prior to your application. Your interview is scheduled for , Monday , 25th June 2022 at 8:00am" I read and a broad smile appeared on my face. I have qualified to attend an interview at Boston but I was yet to open the mail from my dream school.
I took in a deep breath and clicked the mail.
"Yes ! Yes! " I screamed excitedly.
"Are you okay " mom knocked on my door asking.
"I've received an interview message from New York University mom!" I exclaimed
"Really!" She opened the door
"Yes mom" I said and turned the laptop towards her.
"Oh my God son!" She said and wrapped her arms around me.
"I'm so proud of you!" She said
"Thanks mom but I've got to go out!" I said putting on a t shirt
"Won't you have breakfast first?" She asked
"Nah I have to meet Eric " I replied, grabbed my car keys and left.
I called Eric on my way to his place and he was still in bed. I told him about the interview message and he cheered for me.
"I'm scared man!" He said when I asked him to check his.
"Come on man… I already know you've qualified " I said but he insisted on me coming first before he checks. I arrived at his place shortly and just as I thought, he had also qualified for an interview but my interview date was ahead of his. We called James and the rest of my friends and all of us except Bernard qualified for an interview at NYC.
Eric went inside to freshen up and as I waited saw a WhatsApp notification from Amara. My heart skipped a beat and I actually wanted to know what it said.
"You have a text from Amara!" I said to him
"Really ! Can you read what it says " He replied
"Cool buddy…" I said and read it.
"She says to meet her at 5pm today " I said and swiped up to see their previous chats. Eric had asked her if she was ready to give him an answer and she said she wanted them to meet up.
"What if she says yes" I thought. There was no way I could sit and watch Amara date someone else. I know she's probably mad at me because of what happened yesterday. I would have been mad if I were in her shoes . I know by now she believes I was only interested in having sex with her. I wanted to explain everything to her but wouldn't that have sound stupid. Telling her I was in love with her but can't date her because Chloe is blackmailing me with my mom's illness would be the dumbest excuse anyone can give so I would rather let her draw her conclusions about me but one thing I was never going to give up on was her.
I pulled my phone out and texted her.
"Can we talk…" I typed and after five whole minutes my text was still on read. I tried calling her but it went straight to voicemail .
"Can we go " Eric tapped me , causing me to drop my phone. He picked it up and looked at it.
"Who have you been texting dude.." he said playfully and handed the phone to me.
"My girl!" I replied and got up . He shot a weird look and grabbed the car keys.
"I will do the driving today " he said and stepped out.
"I don't mind you driving anytime we head out " I laughed.
Amara's POV
I looked at my phone, reading the notification on my screen.
"Can we talk…" I read and my heart boiled. Wtf did he want to talk about now. Was he going to thank me for being so stupid or was he going to apologize for lying to me or was he going to tease me as he does with all the ladies he had been with, I thought but my thoughts were interrupted by Miss Carlos's deep voice.
"I asked you a question Amara…" she said and I realized the whole class was staring at me.
"I'm sorry Miss Carlos but can you please repeat the question " I replied.
"I've repeated this question for the third time… where was your mind "
"Can I repeat the question to her Miss Carlos, if you don't mind " Stella said and the class laughed. She was trying to make me feel stupid but I wasn't going to be bothered by her today.
"Go ahead Stella" she replied and Stella got up, turning to look at me.
"The question was to explain Newton's 3rd law …Amara!" She said rudely and the class laughed again. I looked at Madison knowing clearly I didn't know the answer. It was our reading assignment during the weekends but I didn't have the time to read. Madi was trying so hard to whisper the answer to me but I was just finding it difficult to make out what she was saying.
"I … I have no idea please " I stuttered and the class laughed.
"That won't be accepted in my class Amara… this was your reading assignment, that means you failed to do the assignment I gave you.."
"I'm sorry Miss Carlos I just found it difficult to remember!" I replied
"She's too dumb…" Stella laughed.
"Does she has the right to call me that Miss Carlos?" I asked
"Answer the question Stella.." she said, ignoring my question.
"Well according to Newton's third law it states that to every action , there is a man equal and opposite reaction… This means that say, if I apply a force on something… I receive the same magnitude of force which I applied." She answered proudly
"Excellent! Well done Stella!" Miss Carlos cheered
"Did you hear that Amara?" She turned to me
"Yes I did " I rolled my eyes .
"Since you didn't do the assignment… you will be in detention today and tomorrow " she said
The class was over and we went to the cafeteria for lunch. Zach , Madison and I sat on one table and we were soon joined by Jake to our surprise.
"Mind if I join you today ?" He asked, pulling the seat next to me.
"No … do you Amara?" Madison replied and I knew I couldn't object even if I wanted.
"It's fine" I replied
"You seem dull today … is it because you got into detention?" Jake asked.
"I'm just not in the right mood… thanks for caring by the way" I replied
"I will stay with her throughout detention " Madison interrupted, sticking her hair around her ears , causing me to chuckle. Madison had this huge crush on Jake and she wasn't even trying to hide it.
"I also got into detention so you don't need to feel so down okay " he replied
"What did you do?" Madi asked
"Nothing serious " he smiled and just then my phone buzzed.
"Excused me" I said and got up to receive the call.
"Hello…" I said but there was a dead silence on the other end . It was an unknown caller.
"Amara…" he said and I instantly recognized the voice.
"Ivan?" I said
"Please don't hang up "
"I don't want to talk to you"
"I know Amara but we have to talk… it's urgent " he replied
"I'm in school at the moment and I can't talk to you, my next class is about to begin "
"Why don't we meet and talk after you close from school "
"I got into detention and I can't leave school until 5"
"Did you get into trouble?" He asked worriedly
"That's none of your business Ivan and I seriously don't think we have anything urgent to talk about goodbye.!" I said and hanged up.
"Are you okay?" Madison tapped me, her face looking worried.
"Yeah it was Ivan .. he wanted to talk " I replied, heading to my seat.
"And what did you say?"
"Of course I said no… I don't want to see him!" I replied angrily.
"That's good dear … don't be fooled by him twice" she replied.
