Chapter 45 - THE OLD CHURCH

The old church stood at the edge of the city, abandoned and surrounded by weeds.

Adrian parked a short distance away.

"This feels wrong," he whispered.

"Everything about my life feels wrong."

He looked at me.

"You don't have to do this."

"Yes, I do."

We entered.

The doors creaked behind us.

"Hello?"

Nothing.

Then—

Clap.

Clap.

Clap.

A man stepped out of the darkness.

My uncle.

He smiled.

"You came."

I felt my entire body tense.

"You have the agreement."

He lifted a brown folder.

"This?"

"Yes."

"You want the truth?"

"I've wanted it my entire life."

He laughed softly.

"You were always curious."

Adrian stepped forward.

"Give her the agreement."

My uncle looked at him.

"You."

His smile disappeared.

"You should have stayed dead."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"I've heard that before."

My uncle opened the folder.

"Do you know why your father wanted you to marry Daniel?"

"To control the trust."

"Partly."

My stomach tightened.

"Partly?"

He looked at me.

"Your father didn't create the trust."

"What?"

"Your biological father did."

Richard.

My biological father.

I could barely breathe.

"He knew you were his daughter," my uncle continued. "And he knew one day the truth would come out."

"Then why didn't he tell me?"

"Because he was afraid."

"Of what?"

My uncle smiled.

"Of me."

A loud noise came from behind us.

Adrian turned.

Two men appeared.

I stepped backward.

My uncle closed the folder.

"You should never have come here."

Adrian grabbed my hand.

"Run."

We turned.

But the doors slammed shut.

My uncle's voice followed us.

"You wanted the truth."

He laughed.

"Now you're going to hear all of it."
