"He is a treasure."
Sarah wasn't trying to be subtle.
"A treasure? What had me acting like this? Something was wrong with me. I shouldn't resent them for what they were saying. Sarah had a mate and loved him, and Maggie loved to joke around. They weren't trying to hurt me or take Ivan.
'And you got mad at Ivan?'
"Few warriors live in the darkness and keep their honor."
I couldn't deny that.
Ivan was a soldier, and he'd seen things I couldn't imagine. He didn't tell me, but I saw it in his eyes. I've also seen Ricky. Both possessed darkness, yet reflected it differently. Ricky let the worst of it consume him, but Ivan lived in the dark and used it as a blanket, not a monster.
"He's a soldier." It was a stupid answer, but all I had.
The funny part? I'm proud of him for it.
"No, he's more than that. He was a soldier once. Now? If he wanted it, he could be a successful warlord. Maybe… even more."
What was that about?
