Chapter 13 - Breaking the Party

"Mu, let's not waste any more time," Beng said, glancing at the quest timer. "We need to farm monsters fast. I've only got 1 hour, 55 minutes, and 38 seconds left to finish this Paladin Spirit quest."

"Don't worry," Mu Lan replied calmly. "We'll get it done. But if we rush, even the tiniest mistake could kill us—either of us. Let's stick to our normal pace. We're already taking down each wolf in three to four minutes. That's more than enough."

"You're right," Beng admitted, exhaling. "I got carried away for a second. If we hurry, we'll end up in the graveyard—just like you said. Let's keep it steady."

"Exactly. You go first—same as before."

"Got it."

Without hesitation, Beng Zeng drew his mace and charged the Green Wolf.

The wolf instantly locked onto him—but every time it lunged, its claws missed. Beng retreated precisely ten steps, and the moment he stopped, Mu Lan opened fire.

The wolf's aggro shifted to Mu Lan—but again, its attacks struck only air. Not a single claw landed on either of them.

After about three minutes, the wolf's health dropped to 5 HP.

"Five HP left," Mu Lan said. "Final hit's yours, Beng."

"Understood."

Mu Lan had deliberately left the killing blow to Beng—after all, this was his quest. Would this strike finally awaken the Paladin's Spirit?

"Mu! I got 10 XP and 1 Copper! Did you get copper too?"

"No," Mu Lan shook his head. "Just XP. Drop rates—for both items and currency—are pure luck. My only guaranteed reward is experience."

He paused. "But more importantly… any sign of the Paladin's Spirit?"

"Still nothing," Beng sighed.

"Then we keep going."

And so they did.

For an hour and a half, they farmed without rest—killing one wolf every four minutes. By the end, they'd slain 22 Green Wolves, earning:

240 total XP5 Copper (Mu Lan)11 Copper (Beng Zeng)Zero item drops

"Mu… this isn't working," Beng groaned. "We've killed 22 wolves, and I still haven't gotten the Paladin's Spirit. Maybe I should just accept the –50 Fame penalty."

Mu Lan frowned. "There's something we're missing. After 22 kills, you should have triggered it by now."

"I don't care what you say, Mu. My –50 Fame is practically on its way."

Then Mu Lan's eyes lit up.

"Wait a minute… The quest is on you—but we're in a party. What if the system only counts solo kills for hidden spirit trials?"

Beng blinked. "I… hadn't thought of that. You mean I have to kill the wolf alone?"

"Exactly. Same strategy—but I won't be in your party. You deal the final blow, and only you get credit."

"Worth a shot," Beng said, disbanding the party. "I'll go in alone."

"Go for it."

Beng approached the next wolf and struck.

He retreated ten steps. Mu Lan—now outside the party—fired from range.

The wolf turned toward Mu Lan and charged—but Beng was already circling behind it. Just as the beast was about to strike, Beng attacked from the rear.

Aggro snapped back to Beng.

Three minutes later, the wolf had 10 HP left.

"From here on, you finish it alone," Mu Lan said firmly. "I won't attack. If that wolf hits you once, it'll take nearly 100 HP—you'll barely survive. But if you kill it solo, you'll get the Spirit."

"Wish me luck," Beng said, gripping his mace. "I need that shield."

"Go get it."

Beng struck the wounded wolf three times—fast, precise, relentless.

The Green Wolf collapsed before it could even turn.

"Mu! I got it!" Beng shouted, grinning. "Finally! And look—I only got 5 XP this time. Guess the system gives more XP to the player who deals the most damage… and since you weren't in the party, I got full credit!"

"Makes perfect sense," Mu Lan nodded. "Hidden trials like this usually require solo completion. Good thing we figured it out before your timer ran out."

"Now let's go claim my reward," Beng said eagerly. "I want that Soulshield!"

"Sounds good to me."
