Chapter 12 - The Green Wolf

"Mu… are you sure we can kill this thing?" Beng's voice trembled as he stared at the wolf. "One hit from it and I'm done. Look at its stats! I only have 160 HP—even if it doesn't one-shot me, three hits will finish me off."

Just then, Mu Lan pulled an item from his inventory: the Advanced Alchemist's Robe.

[Advanced Alchemist's Robe]

He equipped it instantly.

His HP jumped from 80 to 180. The boost was massive.

"Whoa, Mu!" Beng groaned. "Your outfit's glowing! Seriously? You get legendary gear while I'm stuck in rags? Thanks for thinking of me!"

Mu Lan chuckled. "I earned this by completing the alchemy trial. Wish I'd brought some reagents—we could've brewed healing potions and made this even easier. Guess I'll save that for next time."

"Alright, listen carefully," Mu Lan said, turning serious. "If you follow my plan exactly, we'll take this wolf down in five minutes.

Here's how it works:

You charge in and hit it with your mace.Immediately back up 10 steps. When the wolf turns to chase you, I'll attack—it'll shift aggro to me.Then you strike again and retreat another 10 steps.

We'll kite it like this. No mistakes. Got it?"

Beng nodded slowly. "So… I hit, retreat 10 steps. You hit, it turns to you. I hit again, retreat. You hit again. Right?"

"Exactly. Ready?"

"Let's do it."

Beng Zeng stepped forward, mace in one hand, shield in the other. He swung at the Green Wolf.

The damage was pitiful—but that wasn't the point. He immediately began backing away, one step at a time. The wolf lunged, but its claws swiped empty air. Every step had to be precise; one misstep, and the beast's attack would land.

On the tenth step, Mu Lan fired.

The wolf hesitated—its aggro still on Beng—but then it swung again.

Now its focus snapped to Mu Lan. He began retreating slowly, firing as he moved.

Just as the wolf closed in on Mu Lan, Beng charged back in, swinging his mace repeatedly to reclaim aggro.

The moment the wolf turned fully toward Beng, he retreated again—10 clean steps.

In just 10 seconds, they'd whittled the wolf's HP from 500 to 458. At this rate, they'd finish it in under five minutes.

The dance continued. Every attack was timed. Every retreat was measured. To an outside observer, their coordination would've earned a standing ovation.

For two more minutes, they chipped away at the beast. Soon, only 50 HP remained.

When the wolf turned toward Mu Lan one last time, Beng stepped in again—but Mu Lan stopped him with a word.

"Final hit's yours."

"For your quest—you have to land the killing blow. The Paladin's Spirit trial requires it."

Mu Lan fired once more.

–7

The wolf now had only 3 HP left.

"You got this, Beng! Just three more hits—and it's over!"

Beng swung his mace.

The wolf retaliated instantly.

–80

Beng staggered—but didn't fall. His Paladin class perks and shield enchantments had blocked a portion of the damage. Shaken but steady, he raised his mace one last time.

The Green Wolf collapsed.

+10 Experience

"Mu! I got 10 XP! How much did you get?"

"Same," Mu Lan said, grinning. "See? We did it. But we're still nowhere near leveling up. And for your quest, you'll need to kill at least 20 more of these."

Beng checked his experience bar. It had barely moved.

[XP: 10 / 5000]

"At this rate," he muttered, "we'll need to kill 500 wolves just to hit level 2…"
