The explosions shaked the ground as he covered his head with hands, close to the ground in a trench hastily built. His memories travelling to those pure and welcoming moments of his life. Birthdays, romances and brotherhood. The last one recent, a few months. Joining the army, getting matching tatooes before deployment. His friend now a brother for life his smile that made you feel like the world was yours for the taking if he stood by your side. His hair brown his voice light. The first one to help him in training, the first to lift him up when he couldnt run no more. The words "I've got you brother." Echoing in his mind as the world blows up around him. He'd promised to convince his company to arrive and help. Four days of people slowly dying on their knees as the fire kept coming. Never stopping. Hope in the Hearts and minds of those protecting their home. Now shattered along with their defensive line. His brothers around him saying goodbye on their last breaths. The enemy getting ever closer. Ones friends now foes, a war no one wanted. An explosion threw him away from where he was laying low. The world spun, his hearing temporarly gone. His eyes hard of focus. Not sure if screaming in his mind or for real, he let out a roar. Then the name of his brother. Another shockwave sent him into the wall of the trench. His helmet flying far and wide. The sun so bright against his tired eyes. He looked at his hands and feet. Dirty, shaking but whole. He called for his brother again. Staring at the sun again he could see an enemy pushing his position in the corner of his eye. No weapon at hand he sat on his knees waiting for confrontation. The enemy never arrived. He felt his consciousness slip. An illusion. Brown hair, a smile that rivaled that of the sun. Eyes that pierced the soul. His hearing gone and yet he could read the words on his lips as if they appeared in the air. "I got you brother."
