What these two young cops just experienced here is called a gate break. The first one ever to be exact.The gates first appeared 30 years ago and contain monsters that still baffle scientist to this day.
But, the universe always works in balance,the moment the first gate appeared, reports of people seeing a holographic system appeared.It could not be ruled out as simply mental illness though.These people had super human abilities.These people were called slayers.At the age of between 13-18,people "awaken" as slayers and are mandated to work with the government for at least 5 years;not all slayers choose this path;due to their own reasons and become 'Rouge' slayers.
