The players wanted to take down Balor because they can clearly see that he was the most powerful being there. Also, Equinox told them that they can freely hunt any enemy because he wants to protect the territory more than claim the glory of killing the enemy commander.
The players that are using Avalon as a commercial hub are also actively participating because they do not want this territory to vanish. There are only a few territories where the taxes are low and that there are no exorbitant dungeon entrance fees. They rallied to protect Avalon even if they die because they will just respawn in the territory anyway.
