Chapter 112 - HER TWO WORLDS

Their lives had changed quietly.

There had been a time when coming home meant returning to separate spaces, separate routines, separate lives. Now, they shared a home, mornings, meals, the small decisions that used to belong to only one of them. Somewhere along the way, without either of them forcing it, they had found a rhythm that worked.

They were present in each other's lives without crowding them. Denisse still had the vineyard and everything that came with it. Lesley still had the Prime Guard, her restaurant, her staff, her responsibilities. They simply knew when to reach for each other and when to give the other room to breathe.

Lately, though, Lesley had been struggling to find that balance.

The demands of Prime Guard's bigger clients had been taking more of her time than she wanted to admit. Last night, she had finally said it aloud. She was spending so much time handling those responsibilities that her restaurant, the place she had poured years of herself into, was beginning to receive whatever time she had left.

Kate had been doing an excellent job managing things in her absence. Lesley trusted her completely. But there were still days when the restaurant needed another pair of hands, someone who could step in before a small problem became a larger one.

Denisse had listened without interrupting.

And then she had offered to help.

Lesley had barely slept afterward, her mind circling back to it again and again. Not because she doubted Denisse could manage it. Quite the opposite.

Denisse was going to take care of her restaurant.

Her baby.

The thought alone had left something warm spreading through Lesley's chest. The woman she loved and the restaurant she had poured so much of herself into were about to share the same space, and somehow that felt almost too good to be true.

The car rolled into the parking lot the next morning, sunlight glinting across the windshield. Lesley pulled into a space near the front of the restaurant and shifted the car into park.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Lesley glanced toward Denisse.

"You sure this won't affect your work at the vineyard, baby?"

Denisse turned toward her with an easy smile. She reached across the center console and took Lesley's hand, threading their fingers together.

"I told you, babe. I can do it." Her thumb brushed slowly over Lesley's knuckles. "I can handle the vineyard paperwork from the restaurant's office, too."

She gave Lesley's hand a gentle squeeze.

"And most importantly, Kate's there to help me. Remember?"

Lesley looked down at their joined hands.

She did remember.

She also knew Kate well enough to trust her, which made the whole arrangement feel less frightening. Still, a small part of Lesley had been afraid that asking Denisse to step into her world would mean asking for too much.

Instead, Denisse had made it sound simple.

Lesley looked back at her and smiled.

"Thank you for doing this, babe." Her voice softened. "This means a lot."

Denisse's smile widened.

"It's always my pleasure to help my girlfriend."

Something in the way she said it made Lesley's chest tighten pleasantly.

She leaned across the console, closing the small distance between them, and pressed a gentle kiss to Denisse's lips. It lasted only a moment, but when Lesley pulled back, she caught the smile still lingering on Denisse's face.

"Come on," Lesley murmured.

They stepped out of the car together.

The familiar scent of the restaurant reached Lesley the moment they approached the entrance, a mixture of coffee, fresh bread, and the faint sweetness of whatever had been prepared in the kitchen that morning. Through the windows, she could already see movement inside. Staff were setting up tables. Someone hurried past with a tray.

Lesley paused at the door.

For once, she wasn't walking into her restaurant alone.

Denisse slipped her hand into hers.

Together, they walked inside.

After a while, every member of the restaurant staff had gathered in the dining area.

Managers stood near the front, servers clustered together in small groups, while several chefs had wandered out from the kitchen still wearing their aprons. The usual hum of the restaurant had been replaced by curious whispers and the occasional scrape of a chair against the floor.

Lesley stood beside Denisse at the front of the room.

She glanced over the familiar faces. These were people she had worked with for years, people who had watched the restaurant grow alongside her. A few of them were already looking between her and Denisse with poorly concealed curiosity.

Lesley cleared her throat.

"As you all know, aside from owning this restaurant, I'm also the CEO of our family company." She paused, rubbing her thumb lightly against her palm. "And lately, the company has been demanding a little too much of my time."

Several heads nodded.

Lesley glanced toward Kate.

Kate already knew where this was going.

"And I know some of you already know that I'm in a relationship now." Lesley allowed herself a small smile. "A serious one."

Her eyes found Kate's.

Kate's smile immediately spread across her face.

From somewhere near the kitchen came a quiet, victorious, "Yes!"

A few of the chefs murmured their agreement, followed by a couple of muffled laughs. Someone actually clapped once before stopping themselves.

Lesley shook her head, amused.

She turned toward Denisse.

"And with that, I'll be letting my girlfriend manage the restaurant alongside Kate."

A few more curious looks passed through the room.

Lesley slipped an arm around Denisse's waist.

"Everybody, meet my beautiful, sexy, and hardworking-as-ever girlfriend, Denisse Moore."

The room broke into laughter and applause.

Denisse's eyes widened.

She gave Lesley's arm a playful smack.

"You don't have to say all of that."

"What?" Lesley looked at her innocently. "They're true, though."

Denisse rolled her eyes, but the smile tugging at her lips betrayed her.

She turned toward the staff.

"Hello, everyone." She gave a small wave. "Yes, I'm Denisse Moore, Lesley's girlfriend, and I'll be helping run the restaurant alongside Kate."

Her gaze moved across the room, taking in each face.

"I'm new to this, so bear with me, okay? I'm going to have a lot to learn, and I hope you'll let me learn alongside all of you."

The room warmed almost instantly.

Smiles spread across the staff, followed by applause that grew louder than Denisse seemed prepared for. She laughed softly and ducked her head before gesturing for everyone to settle down.

Once the introductions began, Denisse moved from one person to the next, asking their names and learning their roles. She listened carefully, repeating names when necessary so she wouldn't forget them.

Lesley watched her for a moment.

There was something deeply satisfying about seeing Denisse standing there, making herself comfortable in a place Lesley had spent so many years building.

A familiar voice pulled her attention away.

"Finally," Kate said, stepping beside her. "Lesley Ashford is officially off the market."

Lesley laughed under her breath.

"Could you blame me?" She glanced toward Denisse. "With that beauty, brain, and personality, who wouldn't get taken off the market?"

Kate stared at her for a beat, then let out a quiet laugh.

"Look at you," she said, shaking her head.

Lesley raised an eyebrow. "What?"

"Nothing." Kate's smile softened as she glanced toward Denisse. "I just never thought I'd see you this happy."

Lesley followed her gaze.

Denisse was still moving through the staff, smiling as she introduced herself to each person. She looked completely at ease now, as though she had always belonged there.

Kate looked back at Lesley.

"But seriously, I'm happy for you." She lowered her voice. "I saw what you were like back then. You wrecked yourself trying to keep going. Then you spent years avoiding anything that looked remotely like commitment because you were so determined to protect your heart."

Lesley's smile faded into something quieter.

Kate nudged her shoulder.

"Now look at you."

Lesley followed her gaze toward Denisse.

Kate grinned.

"I think we deserve another bonus."

Lesley's brow furrowed.

"Bonus? Why?"

"Don't pretend you forgot." Kate folded her arms. "We're the ones who pushed you into that blind date. If we hadn't chosen that dare, you might never have met Denisse."

Lesley immediately shook her head.

"Oho. You're completely wrong there."

Kate raised an eyebrow.

"Even if we had never met on that blind date, she was still my assistant back then." Lesley's smile returned. "We would've met eventually."

She glanced toward Denisse again.

"We were meant to be."

Kate made a face.

Then she snorted.

"I am really not used to this version of you. Quit being cheesy."

Lesley laughed.

"I'm serious."

"Maybe you two would've still met," Kate said. "But it would've been plain and boring. Everything that happened because of that blind date made it interesting."

She shook her head, smiling at the memory.

"Like a roller coaster."

Lesley considered that.

There had certainly been enough twists and turns to justify the comparison.

"Maybe you're right," she admitted. "And I wouldn't have it any other way."

Before Kate could answer, Lesley noticed Denisse making her way toward them.

Her expression softened immediately.

As Denisse reached her side, Lesley slipped an arm around her waist and pulled her gently against her.

"Oh, and I almost forgot something, guys."

The staff looked over.

Denisse turned toward her, clearly confused.

"Remember when you all dared me to go on that blind date?" Lesley asked.

A few staff members exchanged looks.

Then several heads nodded.

Lesley smiled.

"That blind date was her."

Silence.

She looked around at their stunned faces.

"It was Denisse."

"What?" Chef David blurted.

Mia's eyes widened.

"Really, Ms. Lesley?"

Lesley laughed.

"Yeah."

She looked down at Denisse for a moment, her arm still secure around her waist.

Then she turned back toward the staff.

"So, I guess I should thank all of you."

Her voice softened.

"For giving me the chance to meet the woman I love most."

Denisse's smile slowly grew.

Their eyes met.

For a second, the room around them seemed to disappear.

Denisse's lips curved into a tender smile before she silently mouthed,

I love you more.
