The fire crackled softly in the center of the circle while the group settled back into place.
The bottle sat between them, reflecting the orange glow of the flames.
Jake rubbed his hands together like a man who had just discovered his favorite game.
"Alright," he said. "Round two."
Kate leaned forward again and spun the bottle.
It rolled slowly across the dirt, wobbling once before continuing around the circle.
Everyone watched it.
Emma leaned in slightly.
Liam squinted at it like it was some kind of ancient artifact.
Dylan poked the fire once with his stick and looked back just in time to see the bottle slow down.
It stopped.
The neck pointed directly at Ray.
Jake's grin immediately grew wider.
"Oh no," Liam muttered.
Jake leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees as he looked at Ray like a predator who had just spotted dinner.
"Well, well," he said.
"Truth or dare?"
Ray didn't even think about it.
"Fuck it," he said. "Give me a dare."
Jake nearly jumped to his feet.
"YES!" he shouted, slapping his knee like Christmas had come early.
Liam groaned immediately.
"Oh no…"
Jake leaned forward, pointing dramatically between Ray and Kate.
"I dare you to kiss…" he paused for effect, looking around the circle.
"…Kate on the left cheek."
The group leaned in slightly.
"Then the right cheek."
Emma's eyebrows lifted.
Jake's grin grew even wider.
"And then…"
He pointed again.
"On the lips."
For a moment the fire cracked softly.
No one spoke.
Emma slowly looked at Kate.
Marco glanced between them.
Dylan stopped poking the fire.
Even Liam leaned forward a little.
Everyone was waiting.
Ray turned his head slightly toward Kate.
Ray didn't hesitate.
Before anyone else could say anything, he leaned closer.
Kate turned her head toward him instinctively, her eyes widening slightly as she realized he was actually going through with it.
Ray moved first.
He leaned in and kissed her on the left cheek.
It was quick.
Soft.
But the reaction was immediate.
Kate's cheeks turned red almost instantly.
Around the fire, the group let out a mix of whistles and low laughter as the dare had officially begun.
Then came the other cheek.
Ray leaned in again and kissed her on the right cheek, this time almost immediately, like he wanted to get through that part of the dare as quickly as possible.
Around the fire, Jake was already grinning like a madman while Liam covered his mouth, trying not to laugh too loudly.
"Two down," Jake whispered dramatically.
Ray pulled back slightly.
Only one left.
He turned toward Kate again, ready to finish the dare quickly and get it over with.
But just as he leaned closer—
Kate looked at him.
Right into his eyes.
For the first time since the dare started, she didn't look confident or teasing.
She looked shy.
The faint red on her cheeks hadn't faded, and for a brief moment the noise around the fire seemed to disappear.
Ray paused for half a second.
Everyone around them was watching.
Ray hesitated only for a brief moment.
Then he leaned in.
The kiss was gentle.
Quick.
Just a soft touch of his lips against hers.
Kate didn't move.
She stayed exactly where she was, eyes half-open in surprise, clearly not expecting him to actually go through with the last part so calmly.
A second later Ray pulled back.
The kiss had barely lasted a moment.
But around the fire—
Jake exploded.
"OOOOOOHHHHH!" he shouted, jumping slightly in place.
Liam started laughing loudly.
Emma covered her mouth with both hands.
Marco just shook his head slowly while Dylan leaned back with a smirk.
Kate was still sitting there.
Silent.
Her cheeks now much redder than before.
Kate blinked once.
Then she suddenly straightened up like someone snapping out of a trance.
"Alright," she said quickly, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear like the moment had been nothing special at all.
"Let's go again."
Her voice sounded confident again, almost too confident.
Ray leaned back slightly on the log, pretending to look completely relaxed while Jake was still grinning like he had just witnessed the greatest moment of his life.
Emma exchanged a look with Liam.
Marco quietly took another sip of his drink.
Dylan nudged the bottle back toward the middle of the circle with his foot.
Jake immediately pointed.
"Kate spun last time," he said.
"So it's Ray's turn. "
The bottle sat in the middle of the circle.
Everyone looked at him.
Jake rubbed his hands together again.
"Spin it."
Ray leaned forward and gently spun the bottle.
The glass rolled across the dirt circle, wobbling once as everyone leaned in to see where it would land.
Jake whispered dramatically, "Come on…"
The bottle slowed.
Then stopped.
Pointing straight at Marco.
Marco looked down at it, then back up at Ray with a small smile.
Ray raised an eyebrow.
"Truth or dare?"
Marco didn't hesitate.
"Dare," he said, lifting his drink slightly.
"Fuck the truth."
Ray leaned back slightly and looked at Marco for a second, thinking.
Then a slow grin appeared on his face.
"Alright," he said.
"I dare you to steal Sarah's panties before the end of summer."
For a moment the group went completely silent.
Then Jake burst out laughing.
"Oh my god!"
Emma slapped her knee.
"That is absolutely insane."
Marco blinked once, then leaned back with a quiet chuckle.
"You're giving me a mission for the entire summer?"
Ray shrugged.
"You said fuck the truth."
Liam pointed at Marco with his bottle.
"That's not a dare, that's a heist."
Dylan smirked from his spot near the fire.
"Operation: Laundry Raid."
Marco took another calm sip of his drink and nodded slowly.
"Alright," he said.
"Challenge accepted."
Jake threw his hands in the air.
"This is the best game ever."
For a moment the group was still laughing about Marco's "mission."
Then someone's voice came from behind them.
"Well that was easy."
Everyone turned.
Sarah was standing a few steps away from the fire.
She looked amused.
Without saying much, she casually walked behind one of the nearby trees. The group exchanged confused looks while they waited.
A few seconds later she came back.
Something was in her hand.
She walked straight over to Marco and held it out.
Her panties.
Marco blinked.
She dropped them into his hand like she had just handed him a napkin.
"There," she said casually.
"Mission accomplished."
The group exploded.
Jake nearly fell backward laughing.
Emma covered her face while Liam clapped loudly.
Dylan shook his head in disbelief.
Ray just stared at Marco.
"Well," he said.
"That was faster than expected."
Sarah crossed her arms casually after dropping them into Marco's hand.
"You can keep them," she said, giving him a quick wink.
Marco stared at the underwear in his hand like he had just been handed a live grenade.
Jake lost it.
"Oh my god!" he shouted, nearly falling over laughing.
Emma leaned forward, clutching her stomach.
"Sarah, what the hell!"
Liam slapped Marco on the shoulder.
"Man, you didn't even have to do the heist."
Dylan shook his head slowly, watching the whole scene unfold.
Marco finally looked up from what he was holding.
"…I don't even know what to do with these," he said.
Ray leaned back slightly, clearly entertained.
"Frame them," he suggested.
Jake pointed dramatically.
"Summer camp trophy."
"Alright, alright!" Jake said, raising both hands like he was restoring order to a chaotic courtroom.
The laughter around the fire slowly settled down.
Jake straightened up and pointed at the bottle in the middle.
"This is a serious game," he said dramatically.
Emma rolled her eyes.
Liam snorted.
Marco was still holding Sarah's panties like he wasn't entirely sure what to do with them.
Jake pointed at him again.
"Now it's your turn to spin, Marco!"
Marco looked down at the bottle.
Then at the group.
Then back at the bottle again.
With a small shrug, he leaned forward and flicked it with his fingers.
The bottle spun across the dirt, the firelight reflecting off the glass as everyone leaned in to see where it would land next.
The bottle slowed, wobbling slightly before coming to a stop.
Its neck pointed directly at Sarah.
Marco leaned back slightly and looked at her with a small smile.
"Truth or dare?"
Sarah didn't even hesitate.
"Truth."
Jake immediately booed loudly.
"BOOO!"
He threw his hands up in dramatic disappointment.
"Truth is for cowards!"
Emma laughed.
"Maybe she just doesn't trust you idiots with dares."
Liam leaned forward slightly, clearly curious now.
Marco thought for a moment before speaking.
The fire crackled softly while everyone waited for the question.
Marco rubbed the back of his neck slightly, a faint red creeping onto his face as he looked around the circle.
Then he asked the question.
"Alright… truth," he said. "Who would you sleep with from here, if you had the chance?"
The group immediately reacted.
Jake leaned forward like he had just been handed front-row tickets to a show.
"Ooooooh!"
Emma lifted an eyebrow.
Liam chuckled quietly while Dylan poked the fire again, clearly listening.
Sarah looked around the circle slowly, taking her time.
The firelight flickered across everyone's faces as they waited for her answer.
Sarah didn't take long to think.
She looked straight at Marco first, then slowly turned her gaze around the circle before stopping on Ray.
"Ray, of course," she said with a playful smile. "I'd love to meet his lightsaber."
Jake nearly choked on his drink.
Emma burst out laughing.
Liam leaned back with a loud "damn."
Ray blinked in surprise while Dylan just smirked at the fire.
Sarah kept her eyes on Marco though, clearly enjoying the reaction she was getting out of him.
Marco looked even redder now, realizing he had walked straight into that answer.
Jake slapped Ray on the shoulder.
"Well, congratulations," he said. "You've got options tonight."
Kate didn't react right away.
She kept her eyes on the fire, watching the flames dance between the pieces of wood as the group around them burst into laughter.
Jake was still congratulating Ray.
Emma was teasing Sarah.
Marco looked like he regretted asking the question.
But Kate stayed quiet.
For a brief moment, something inside her tightened.
The thought of Sarah actually sleeping with Ray crossed her mind.
And strangely enough…
It hurt.
Just a little.
Kate frowned slightly, almost annoyed with herself.
She didn't even understand why the thought bothered her.
She had only known Ray for a few days.
Yet the idea of Sarah's playful comment suddenly didn't feel as funny as everyone else seemed to think.
Kate took a slow sip from her beer and forced herself to relax again.
Still…
Something told her this was going to be a long night.
