Chapter 1 - When Our Hearts Found Each Other

The rain fell softly over the streets of Kolkata, washing the dust from the old buildings and filling the evening air with the scent of wet earth. People hurried along the sidewalks with umbrellas, but Aarav stood still beneath a streetlight, waiting.

He checked his watch again.

Seven minutes late.

Not that he minded. Waiting for Maya had become something he secretly enjoyed.

When she finally appeared at the corner, her long hair slightly damp from the rain, Aarav felt the same quiet excitement he had felt the first time he saw her at the university library two years ago.

"You're staring again," Maya said with a playful smile as she approached.

"I was making sure you were real," Aarav replied.

She laughed softly. "After two years, you still doubt it?"

"Sometimes," he said. "Because loving you feels too perfect."

They began walking together along the riverfront. The lights from the bridges shimmered on the dark water, and the city buzzed quietly around them.

Maya had always been different from anyone Aarav had ever known. She was fearless with her dreams but gentle with people. When she spoke about the future, her eyes sparkled like stars.

But their love had not been simple.

A year earlier, Maya had received a job offer in another city. Aarav had felt his heart break when she told him.

"Distance changes things," he had said that night.

"Only if we let it," Maya answered.

And for months they had lived with that distance — long phone calls, late-night messages, and visits that felt too short.

Now she was back.

"I missed this city," Maya said as they sat on a bench overlooking the river.

"Just the city?" Aarav teased.

She looked at him quietly.

"No," she whispered.

The wind blew gently through her hair, and for a moment neither of them spoke.

Love was strange. It wasn't always loud or dramatic. Sometimes it was simply two people sitting together, feeling safe in silence.

Maya took Aarav's hand.

"You know," she said, "I realized something while I was away."

"What?"

"That love isn't just about passion. It's about choosing someone again and again… even when life pulls you in different directions."

Aarav squeezed her hand.

"And what did you choose?"

She leaned her head on his shoulder.

"You."

The rain began again, soft and quiet.

But this time they didn't rush away.

Because sometimes love wasn't about escaping the storm.

Sometimes it was about standing in it together.
