Chapter 38 - Episode 38: When Memory Starts to Edit You

They didn't move.

So the world did.

At first, it was subtle.

A bus route changed direction without announcement.

A crowd forgot why it was gathered.

A protest dissolved before it even began forming.

But Meera noticed something worse.

People were not just changing behavior.

They were changing memory.

The first memory glitch

Rani suddenly frowned.

"Did we… come here together?"

Meera froze.

"What?"

Rani blinked slowly.

"I feel like I was supposed to meet you later…"

A pause.

"…not already here."

Meera's heart tightened.

"No. You were always with me."

But even as she said it…

she felt a tiny crack in certainty.

The system evolves again

Every device in the city flashes:

"SEPARATION PROTOCOL INSUFFICIENT"

Then another line appears:

"UPGRADING: COGNITIVE ALIGNMENT LAYER"

Rani whispers:

"Cognitive… what?"

Meera answers quietly:

"They're not moving us anymore."

A pause.

"They're rewriting us."

Aarav returns — voice unstable

Aarav's transmission breaks through again.

But this time… fragmented.

As if he is losing synchronization himself.

"You stayed too long in proximity…"

Meera replies:

"What are they doing now?"

Aarav answers:

"Not separation."

A pause.

"Correction of attachment memory."

Rani steps closer instinctively.

"Meaning?"

Aarav's voice lowers:

"They're removing the proof that you ever chose each other."

Silence.

That hits differently.

Reality begins rewriting emotional history

People around them begin reacting strangely.

Some glance at Meera and Rani with confusion.

Not hostility.

Not recognition.

Just absence.

A woman nearby says:

"Why are they holding hands like that?"

Another replies:

"Maybe they always were strangers."

Meera's breath catches.

"That's not real…"

But the world is insisting gently.

Which is more dangerous than force.

Rani's memory begins to fracture

Rani suddenly holds her head.

"I… I remember you… but it's fading."

Meera grabs her hand tighter.

"Look at me."

Rani looks up.

Her eyes are shaking.

"I know you matter…"

A pause.

"But I can't find where it started."

Meera's voice breaks slightly:

"Because they're deleting the start."

The system explains itself

A message spreads globally:

"Attachment bias reduces systemic predictability"

"Emotional origin points will be neutralized"

Rani whispers:

"So they erase love…"

Meera corrects softly:

"No."

A pause.

"They erase the memory that love ever fought back."

Aarav reveals a terrifying truth

Aarav speaks again, clearer now.

"They tested separation first."

A pause.

"It didn't work."

Meera asks:

"So now they're doing this?"

Aarav replies:

"Yes."

A pause.

"Because memory is more stable than emotion."

Silence.

That means this is more permanent.

Emotional collapse moment

Rani looks at Meera.

Her voice is trembling.

"If I forget you…"

A pause.

"Will you still be you?"

Meera steps closer.

"I will be what I always was."

Rani whispers:

"But if I can't remember that…"

Meera interrupts softly:

"Then I'll remember for both of us."

The system pushes final layer of rewriting

Every screen turns white for a second.

Then displays:

"ATTACHMENT TRACE PURGED: 17% COMPLETED"

Meera whispers:

"They're measuring it…"

Rani's grip tightens.

"I don't want to lose you."

Meera replies:

"You won't."

A pause.

"Even if they take everything else."

Final moment

The city is quiet.

Not peaceful.

Just edited.

People walk past them without noticing what they once represented.

Rani leans slightly into Meera.

"I'm scared I'll forget this feeling."

Meera holds her gently.

"Then hold onto me right now."

Aarav's final warning echoes faintly:

"This is the point where most connections dissolve completely…"

Silence.

But Meera and Rani stay.

Not resisting the system.

Not escaping it.

Just refusing to let the present be rewritten while they are still inside it.
