Chapter 6 - 6

The sound didn't fade.

It grew.

Low.

Deep.

Like the earth itself was breathing.

Aarav felt it before he understood it.

A vibration beneath his feet.

A pressure in the air.

"…You hear that?" he whispered.

Rohan nodded slowly, his expression serious. "Yes, and to be honest, I don't think we want to cross paths with whatever is making that noise."

Meera didn't respond.

Her eyes were fixed ahead.

"It's close," she said.

The map that Aarav was holding started to glow even more brightly than it had before.

The path ended just ahead.

"…So this is it," Aarav said quietly.

No one answered.

Because they all felt it—

Something was waiting.

They stepped into a clearing.

And everything changed.

The forest stopped.

No twisted trees.

No glowing shadows.

No whispering voices.

Just silence.

Perfect.

Unnatural.

In the middle of a big open space, there was something really huge standing there.

At first, Aarav thought it was a statue.

Stone.

Ancient.

Covered in vines and cracks.

A towering figure shaped like a warrior, its form carved with intricate symbols that faintly glowed beneath layers of time.

"…It's not moving," Rohan whispered.

Meera stepped forward slightly.

Carefully.

"It's not a statue," she said.

Aarav frowned. " Then what is it?"

Meera's voice dropped.

"A guardian."

As if the word itself triggered something—

The ground trembled.

Aarav's breath caught.

Crack.

The stone figure shifted.

Slowly.

Its head lifted.

Dust fell from its body as ancient joints moved for the first time in centuries.

Its eyes—

Glowed.

A deep, golden light burned within them.

Alive.

"…Okay," Rohan said quietly, "now it's definitely moving."

The Guardian stepped forward.

Each movement heavy.

Powerful.

The ground shook beneath its weight.

Aarav instinctively stepped back.

"Wait—!" he started.

Too late.

The Guardian raised its arm—

And struck the ground.

A shockwave burst outward.

The force threw all three of them backward.

Aarav hit the ground hard, pain shooting through his side.

"Get up!" Meera shouted.

Aarav pushed himself up quickly.

The Guardian turned toward them.

Watching.

Judging.

"This isn't random," Meera said.

Rohan let out a frustrated sigh as he stood up, "Figures, nothing ever is."

The Guardian's voice echoed—

Not spoken.

Felt.

"WHO SEEKS THE PATH?"

The sound wasn't loud—

But it filled everything.

Aarav froze.

"…We do," he said.

The Guardian's glowing gaze locked onto him.

"THE PATH IS NOT GIVEN."

Aarav swallowed.

"…Then what is it?"

A pause.

Then—

"EARNED."

The Guardian moved again.

Faster this time.

Aarav didn't even flinch as this huge arm came swinging his way.

"Move!" Meera shouted.

He dodged just in time.

The ground cracked where the strike landed.

"That answers that!" Rohan yelled.

Meera drew her bow.

"This isn't a fight," she said.

Aarav ducked another strike.

"Then what is it?!"

"A test!"

Rohan blinked. " Of what?! Survival?!"

The Guardian attacked again.

This time, Meera fired.

The arrow struck its chest—

And shattered instantly.

"…Okay, that's not working," Rohan said.

Aarav's mind raced.

A test.

Not a battle.

"…Wait!" he shouted.

Meera glanced at him. " What are you doing?!"

Aarav stepped forward.

Directly toward the Guardian.

"Aarav, don't—!" Rohan started.

Too late.

The Guardian raised its arm again.

Aarav didn't move.

His heart pounded.

Every instinct screamed at him to run.

But he stayed.

"Hey, if this is some kind of test, just let me know what you're looking for!"

The Guardian paused.

Its glowing eyes burned brighter.

"PROVE YOUR WORTH."

Aarav clenched his fists.

"How?!"

Silence.

Then—

The ground beneath them shifted again.

Symbols appeared.

Glowing.

Forming a circle around them.

Rohan's eyes widened. " Oh… this is new."

Meera stepped closer to Aarav.

"What is it?" she asked.

Aarav looked down.

The symbols moved.

Changing.

Shifting into patterns.

"…It's not a fight," he realized.

Rohan leaned in close, his voice low and hopeful, "Tell me it's not some kind of puzzle we have to figure out."

Aarav looked up.

At the Guardian.

"You're not testing strength," he said.

The Guardian didn't move.

"…You're testing us."

A pause.

Then—

The symbols stopped moving.

Locked into place.

Three sections.

One for each of them.

Meera stepped forward.

"…It's individual."

Rohan let out a groan, thinking to himself, "I knew I should've just stayed home."

Aarav took a breath.

"…We do this together," he said.

Meera shook her head.

"No."

Aarav frowned. " What?"

She told him, "This is the path you're meant to be on, the map picked you for a reason."

The words hit harder than expected.

Rohan looked between them.

"…She's right."

Aarav hesitated.

Fear crept in.

"What if I fail?" he asked quietly.

Meera met his eyes.

"Then we all do."

Silence.

Then—

Aarav nodded.

"…Okay."

He stepped into the center.

The symbols beneath him flared with light.

The world shifted.

Darkness surrounded him.

Again.

But this time—

He wasn't alone.

A voice echoed.

His voice.

"You're not ready."

Aarav froze.

"No…"

"You're just a boy who wanted more."

The words cut deep.

"You don't belong here."

Aarav clenched his fists.

"I do."

The darkness shifted.

Images appeared.

Him.

Failing.

Falling.

Losing.

"You'll get them hurt."

Aarav's breath shook.

"…No."

"You already have."

Silence.

For a moment—

He believed it.

Then—

He remembered.

The map.

The journey.

The choice.

"I didn't ask for this," he said.

The voice responded—

"No."

Aarav's eyes hardened.

"But I chose it."

The darkness cracked.

Light broke through.

"I'm not turning back," Aarav said.

The voice faded.

The world snapped back.

Aarav stood in the clearing again.

The symbols glowed brighter.

Then—

Disappeared.

The Guardian stepped back.

Slowly.

"…WORTHY."

Silence.

Then—

It moved aside.

Revealing a path beyond the clearing.

Open.

Waiting.

Rohan blinked.

"…We're alive."

Meera lowered her bow.

"…You passed."

Aarav exhaled slowly.

Not just relief.

Something else.

Confidence.

For the first time—

He didn't feel lost.

He felt ready.

The Guardian returned to stillness.

As if it had never moved.

But the path ahead—

Was now theirs.

And whatever lay beyond—

Would change everything.
