Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 — Too Close

POV: Evelyn

Her heart hadn't slowed down.

Not even a little.

It was still racing hard against her ribs like it was trying to escape her body, like it knew something she didn't. Like it understood the danger better than her mind could process.

Daniel stood in front of her.

Close.

Too close.

Five years.

Five years of silence, of anger, of questions that never got answers and now he was here, standing in front of her like nothing had changed.

Like he hadn't broken her.

Like he hadn't disappeared and left her to pick up the pieces alone.

Evelyn swallowed, forcing the lump in her throat down.

"You're being watched."

His words echoed in her head.

Not me.

Then who?

Her fingers curled into fists at her sides.

This didn't make sense. None of it did.

"You don't get to show up like this," she said, her voice shaking despite how hard she tried to steady it. "You don't get to disappear for years and then suddenly what? Act like you care?"

Daniel didn't react the way she expected.

No anger.

No denial.

Just that same intense look, like he was holding something back.

"I never stopped"

"Don't," she cut in sharply. "Don't say that."

Because if he did…

If he said anything that sounded like regret or care…

She wasn't sure she'd be able to hold onto her anger.

And anger was all she had left.

From the backseat, a small voice broke through the tension.

"Mama?"

Evelyn turned instantly.

Lily was watching them, her wide gray eyes moving between Evelyn and Daniel.

Curious.

Confused.

Too observant for a child her age.

Evelyn's chest tightened.

She forced a smile, softening her voice.

"It's okay, baby. Get comfortable, alright?"

Lily nodded slowly, but she didn't look convinced.

Evelyn shut the car door gently, her hand lingering on it for a second longer than necessary.

Protect.

That was all that mattered.

Not Daniel.

Not the past.

Not the questions clawing at her mind.

Just Lily.

She turned back to Daniel, her expression hard again.

"Move," she said. "We're leaving."

Daniel didn't argue.

But he didn't move immediately either.

His eyes flicked briefly toward the street, scanning.

Checking.

Like he didn't trust the silence.

That unsettled her more than anything else.

"What are you looking at?" she asked.

"Making sure you're not walking into something worse," he replied.

Her irritation flared.

"I've been taking care of myself just fine without you."

His gaze snapped back to hers.

"I can see that."

That stung.

More than it should have.

Her jaw tightened.

"Get out of my way."

He stepped aside.

But not far.

Never far.

Evelyn ignored him and got into the driver's seat, her hands gripping the steering wheel a little too tightly.

Her fingers trembled.

She hated that.

Hated that he could still shake her this way.

Hated that everything felt so… unfinished.

She started the engine.

For a second, everything was quiet.

Too quiet.

Then

A loud bang echoed from somewhere down the street.

Lily gasped in the backseat.

Evelyn's heart jumped into her throat.

"What was that?" she whispered.

Daniel turned sharply toward the sound, his entire body going rigid.

"Drive," he said.

Something in his tone made her stomach drop.

Not a suggestion.

A warning.

"Daniel"

"Evelyn, drive."

This time, she didn't argue.

She pressed the gas.

The car jerked forward, tires scraping slightly against the road.

Her hands tightened on the wheel.

"Talk to me," she said, her voice strained. "What is going on?"

Daniel moved fast.

Too fast.

One second he was outside

The next, the passenger door opened and he slipped into the seat beside her.

Evelyn slammed on the brakes instinctively.

"What are you doing?!" she snapped.

"Driving with you," he said, already scanning the mirrors. "Go."

"I didn't say you could"

"Evelyn!"

She flinched.

Not because he shouted.

But because it sounded like the Daniel she remembered.

The one who used to take control without asking.

The one she used to trust.

Her heart twisted painfully.

She pressed the gas again.

They drove in silence for a few seconds.

Then

"Someone's following us," Daniel said.

Evelyn's stomach dropped.

"What?"

"Black SUV. Two cars behind."

Her grip on the wheel tightened.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No doubt.

Just certainty.

Fear crept up her spine, cold and sharp.

She checked the rearview mirror.

And there it was.

A black SUV.

Too steady.

Too close.

Her pulse spiked.

"Oh my God…"

"Stay calm," Daniel said. "Don't make it obvious."

"Don't make it obvious?" she snapped. "We're being followed!"

"I know."

His voice was steady.

Controlled.

It grounded her more than she wanted to admit.

"Just keep driving," he added. "I'll handle it."

Her head snapped toward him.

"You'll handle it? How?"

But he didn't answer.

That scared her more.

The SUV sped up slightly.

Closing the distance.

Evelyn's breathing became shallow.

Her chest tight.

Lily shifted in the backseat.

"Mama… what's happening?"

Evelyn's heart broke a little.

"Nothing, baby," she said quickly. "Just… just hold on, okay?"

Her voice wasn't convincing.

Not even to herself.

"Take the next left," Daniel said.

"What?"

"Do it."

She didn't argue.

She turned sharply.

The SUV followed.

Her hands started to shake.

"They're still there."

"I know."

"Daniel"

"Trust me."

The words hit her harder than anything else.

Trust me.

Like he hadn't shattered that word years ago.

Like it still meant something.

She clenched her jaw.

"I don't trust you."

His expression didn't change.

"I know."

A beat.

"But right now, you don't have a choice."

The road narrowed.

Less traffic.

Less people.

Evelyn's pulse raced faster.

This was a mistake.

This was a trap.

"Where are we going?" she demanded.

"Somewhere they won't expect."

"That's not reassuring!"

"Faster, Evelyn."

She pressed the gas harder.

The engine roared.

The SUV followed.

Closer.

Closer.

Too close.

Suddenly

"Brake," Daniel said.

"What?!"

"Brake!"

She slammed her foot down.

The car jerked to a stop.

The SUV almost crashed into them but swerved at the last second, speeding past instead.

For a moment…

Everything went still.

Evelyn blinked.

"What just happened?"

Daniel exhaled slowly.

"They didn't expect you to stop."

Her heart pounded.

"That's your plan?!" she snapped. "To almost get us killed?!"

"We're alive, aren't we?"

"That's not the point!"

Lily started crying softly in the backseat.

That broke something in Evelyn.

She turned, reaching back.

"It's okay, baby. It's okay…"

Her voice trembled.

Her hands shook.

But she held it together.

For Lily.

Always for Lily.

When she turned back around, her eyes burned.

Anger.

Fear.

Everything mixing together.

"Get out," she said quietly.

Daniel frowned. "What?"

"Get. Out."

"I'm not leaving you like this."

"You already did that once," she shot back.

That hit.

Hard.

But she didn't stop.

"I don't know what you're involved in," she continued, her voice rising. "I don't know who's after you or why but I won't let it touch my daughter."

His expression darkened.

"This isn't about me."

"Then explain it!" she snapped. "For once in your life, just tell me the truth!"

Silence.

Heavy.

Painful.

He didn't answer.

Of course he didn't.

He never did.

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

"Exactly."

She opened the door.

"Get out."

He hesitated.

For a second, she thought he might argue.

Might fight her on it.

But then

He stepped out.

Quietly.

She didn't wait.

Didn't look back.

She drove.

Faster this time.

Away from him.

Away from everything.

Her hands trembled on the wheel.

Her chest tight.

Her mind racing.

What just happened?

Who was that?

Why now?

Why him?

By the time she pulled into her driveway, the adrenaline was still coursing through her veins.

She barely remembered the drive.

Everything felt blurred.

Distant.

Like she was still stuck in that moment.

Still running.

She turned off the engine.

Sat there for a second.

Breathing hard.

Trying to steady herself.

Then she stepped out.

Walked around to the back.

Opened the door.

"Come on, baby," she said softly.

Lily climbed out, still quiet.

Still shaken.

Evelyn lifted her into her arms, holding her tight.

Too tight.

Like she might lose her if she didn't.

As she turned toward the house

She froze.

Something was off.

Her eyes dropped slowly.

To the hood of the car.

And her breath caught.

A single red rose lay there.

Fresh.

Perfect.

Impossible.

Her heart started racing again.

No.

No, no, no…

Not here.

Not after that.

Not now.

Her grip on Lily tightened.

"Mama?" Lily whispered.

Evelyn didn't answer.

She couldn't.

Because taped to the stem…

Was a small note.

Her fingers shook as she reached for it.

Pulled it free.

Unfolded it slowly.

Her vision blurred for a second before the words came into focus.

"You can't run forever."

The world tilted.

Her chest tightened.

And for the first time since all of this started…

Evelyn felt real fear settle deep in her bones.

Because whoever was behind the roses…

Was no longer watching from a distance.

They were getting closer.

Evelyn realizes the roses aren't just from Daniel anymore someone else is sending a message… and they're getting dangerously close.
