Amity let out an annoyed sigh as the cafe came into view. Ugh, she thought to herself, I accidentally walked back to the cafe? I meant to go to the library.. Whatever.. I'm already here.. She thought to herself as she neared the cafe door.
Amity nervously grabbed the cafe door. I can't let some.. Barista.. ruin my study routine. She thought to herself as she straightened up her shoulders and walked in. She looked around, noticing Luz wasn't here. Mixed emotions overcame her as she walked towards the register.
Willow was already ringing in her order and pouring her cup of black coffee. "Thanks," Amity said flatly as she paid for her coffee. "Of course!" Willow said with a smile.
Amity made her way to her usual table and sat down, placing her things neatly on the table as she took out her laptop and books. She opened up her notebook and pulled out her pen pouch, getting ready to study.
—
Several hours passed by, and the sun started to set. Amity had lost herself in her coursework, not noticing Luz's approach.
"I don't think you've looked up once since I walked in," Luz said teasingly as she stood over Amity's table, holding an iced cup.
"Huh? Did you say something?" Amity said as her head snapped up, looking up at Luz.
"Uh.. That sounded less creepy in my head.." Luz said awkwardly as she shifted her weight from foot to foot.
"Have you been watching me?" Amity asked, narrowing her eyes slightly as she tapped her pen on her notebook.
"No!" Luz said as her face started to turn red, "It's just... you're sitting in my line of sight, and I can't help but notice you sometimes. I didn't mean it in a creepy way.." Luz said awkwardly, trying to save herself, "Uh, anyway. I made you an iced tea, it's an herbal tea, so no caffeine.. It's getting kind of late.." Luz said as she set the glass down, changing the subject.
Amity shifted her expression down to the glass, staring at it blankly before looking up at Luz, "I didn't order that."
"I know, it's uh.. on the house again." Luz said with a crooked smile, "I thought you might be thirsty after all that homework." She said as she picked up Amity's empty coffee mug from earlier.
"I..I'm fine." Amity said stiffly as she cleared her throat, "Why did you bring me this?"
Luz's face started to turn red again, "Um.. No particular reason. Anyway. I should get back to work." Luz said as she started to back up.
"Yes. You should. I should as well." Amity said curtly as she straightened up and turned her attention back down towards her laptop, looking away from Luz.
Luz retreated back behind the bar to Willow and Gus. Amity glanced up from her laptop at the tea that Luz brought her.
It was a dark pinkish-red color. Amity stared at it curiously before deciding to taste it. It had a fruity, yet minty, taste to it. Subtly sweet and refreshing. She pressed her lips together before letting out a soft sigh. It wasn't terrible.
She took another sip of it as she started writing her notes again. Amity was annoyed she liked the drink, annoyed that Luz interrupted her focused state. She tapped her pen frustratedly on her notebook as she tried to focus back on her assignment.
Amity struggled to keep her focus, hearing Luz's voice every time she spoke a little too loudly. She could hear Willow coaching Luz through making drinks, warming food, and using the register.
Amity let out a frustrated growl as she struggled to focus, pulling out a pair of headphones. It's fine, I'll just listen to some music while I work, she thought to herself as she put her headphones on.
Eventually, Amity was able to gather herself and focus once again, but she still found her thoughts wandering to Luz, finding her gaze drawn to the glass of tea Luz gave her.
—
A short while later, Amity happened to glance up and see that Luz was cleaning the table next to hers. She noticed Luz trying to say something, but her headphones drowned out all the noise.
Amity pointed to her headphones. Luz just repeated herself. Amity took her headphones off and put them around her neck. "What?" She asked with a slight irritation.
"Hold on, I'll be right back," Luz said with a crooked smile; her tone was extra cheery.
Amity let out a frustrated sigh. I don't know if this is gonna work. She's too distracting. Amity thought as Luz disappeared behind the counter.
Amity glanced around for the first time in a while since she entered. She noticed it was getting late, and she and Hunter were the only people in the lobby.
Amity's attention was brought back to herself as Luz approached her again, this time she was carrying a plate, "I was saying that I accidentally heated this up if you wanted it."
She set the plate down on Amity's table. It was some kind of chocolate loaf looking pastry. Her stomach growled at the thought of food, not realizing she was even getting hungry.
"Um.." Amity stammered, "I didn't order this."
"Yeah, I know." Luz said with a small laugh, "I accidentally heated it up by mistake.. It's for you now if you want it."
Amity narrowed her eyes at it for a second as she considered, "I guess.. that's fine.." Her tone was curious but still flat.
"I hope you like it." Luz smiled as she lingered for a moment.
Amity cleared her throat, "Um.. I'm kind of busy, so if you could uh.." Amity said awkwardly as she started to put her headphones back on.
"Right!" Luz said, her cheeks turning red, "Um.. See you later?" She said as she turned to retreat behind the counter.
Amity didn't say anything, drowning out the cafe once again with her headphones. Amity curiously stared at the loaf before breaking off a small piece to try. Ugh, of course, this is also good. How can I hate her when she brings me good food and drinks? Why does she even bring me this stuff? Amity thought to herself, frustratedly. She let out a sigh as she started to work on her assignment again.
—
Eventually, Amity's plate and cup were both empty, and it was dark outside.
Amity stifled a yawn as she leaned back in her chair. I guess I should probably call it for the night. She thought to herself as she started to neatly put away her pens and highlighters.
As she was putting her books and laptop into her bag, Luz appeared, "Heading out for the night?" She asked as she approached Amity's table.
"Yeah," Amity said flatly as Luz reached her table.
"Do you always sit here?" Luz asked as she reached for the dishes on Amity's table.
"Yes, and you don't have to do that. I was going to put them in the bus bin." Amity said as she looked up at Luz.
"Oh, it's fine, I don't mind." Luz said with a smile as she stepped back, "Do you always come here around the same time?" She asked Amity.
Amity stiffened, "Why?" She asked defensively.
Luz shrugged, "You seem like the kind of person with a consistent schedule." She said as she awkwardly shifted her feet.
Amity huffed, "Perhaps, what's it to you?" Amity snapped, getting more defensive as Luz perceived her.
Luz looked surprised and a little confused, "Um.. Nothing.. Just curious.. So, um, same time tomorrow?" Luz asked as her face started to turn a little red.
Amity looked at her with confusion and annoyance, "Perhaps." She said flatly before she stood up to leave.
"Okay," Luz said awkwardly as she started to regain her composure.
Amity looked at her; her face softened a little, but she quickly looked away, moving to leave the cafe. Amity made her way across campus towards her dorm. Why does she bother me so much? I don't even know her. Amity thought to herself as she walked. Will I go back tomorrow? She continued thinking to herself as she walked through the campus.
