Chapter 5 - c5

The ranking board did not settle quietly.

It exploded.

Names shifted rapidly beneath the glowing display, numbers recalculating as the system processed every performance, every strike, every movement made during the evaluation. Students who had walked in with confidence now stared upward with tight expressions, watching their positions fluctuate.

Some rose.

Many fell.

But at the very top—

Nothing changed.

**Rank 1 — Kai Zenith**

It remained there.

Unmoving.

Unchallenged.

Unreachable.

Kai stood beneath the board, hands in his pockets, gaze drifting across the crowd rather than the ranking itself. The result had already lost its meaning the moment it appeared.

Because he already knew.

The outcome had never been in question.

What interested him more—

Was the reaction.

Students whispered, but not as freely as before. Their voices were lower now, more cautious, as if afraid of being overheard.

"That's the Zenith youngest…"

"He crushed Darius like it was nothing…"

"Rank 1 on the first day… is that even normal?"

"It's not."

Kai ignored all of it.

Because weak opinions had no value.

A sudden shift in the atmosphere drew his attention.

Not loud.

Not obvious.

But distinct.

The kind of change only someone with sharp perception would notice.

Kai's eyes moved slightly.

Then stopped.

At the edge of the main platform—

Someone was watching him.

A boy.

About the same age.

Standing alone.

No aura flaring.

No attempt to draw attention.

Yet—

The space around him felt… quiet.

Not empty.

But controlled.

Contained.

Their eyes met.

For a brief moment—

Neither moved.

Then—

The boy smiled faintly.

Not mocking.

Not arrogant.

Just… acknowledging.

Kai stared at him.

Expression unchanged.

But internally—

Something shifted.

"…Finally," he murmured.

Not because the boy had done anything impressive.

Not yet.

But because—

For the first time—

He felt something different.

Not dominance.

Not certainty.

But…

Possibility.

The boy turned and walked away without a word.

Kai watched him go.

He didn't follow.

Didn't call out.

Because there was no need.

If the boy was worth anything—

They would meet again.

And if he wasn't—

Then it didn't matter.

"Zenith."

A familiar voice.

Kai didn't turn this time.

"…What."

His sister stepped beside him.

Her gaze remained on the ranking board.

"…Rank 1," she said.

No praise.

No surprise.

Just observation.

Kai said nothing.

She continued.

"You've drawn too much attention."

"…That was inevitable."

She glanced at him.

Briefly.

"You're not wrong."

A pause.

Then—

"…Father will hear about this."

Kai shrugged slightly.

"…He already has."

That level of performance—

That level of exposure—

There was no way it wouldn't reach the family instantly.

Information traveled fast.

Especially when it involved power.

His sister studied him again.

More carefully this time.

"You're different," she said quietly.

"Still on that?"

"…You don't hide it."

Kai finally turned his head slightly.

"…Why would I?"

A simple question.

But the answer—

Was obvious.

There was no reason to hide strength.

Not in this world.

Not in this environment.

Not when power defined everything.

His sister didn't respond immediately.

Because she understood.

Even if she didn't like it.

"…The Elite Division will notice you," she said after a moment.

"Let them."

"…You're still a freshman."

Kai's gaze returned to the arena.

"…And?"

She frowned slightly.

Because that answer—

Was exactly what she expected.

And exactly what she couldn't refute.

An announcement echoed across the grounds.

"All participants remain in position."

The instructor from earlier stepped forward once more, his presence immediately drawing attention.

"The final rankings have been confirmed."

The board stabilized.

No more movement.

No more changes.

"Those within the top fifty will receive priority resource allocation."

A ripple of excitement passed through the students.

Resources meant everything.

Training rooms.

Techniques.

Personal instructors.

"All others," the instructor continued, "will be assigned standard development paths."

The difference—

Was massive.

The gap between top fifty and the rest—

Was not small.

It was a wall.

"And finally—"

A slight pause.

"Special recognition."

The crowd quieted again.

The instructor's gaze shifted.

Directly to Kai.

"Rank 1—Kai Zenith. Step forward."

Kai moved.

Without hesitation.

Without interest.

He stepped onto the platform once more, standing alone beneath the attention of hundreds.

The instructor studied him for a moment.

Then—

"You will receive direct access to advanced training facilities."

Murmurs.

Louder this time.

"That's only for second-years…"

"He just got here…"

Kai listened.

But didn't react.

The instructor continued.

"And—"

A brief pause.

"As per academy policy, exceptional candidates may be issued a challenge."

The atmosphere shifted again.

Sharper.

Focused.

Kai's eyes lifted slightly.

"…A challenge?"

The instructor nodded.

"Yes."

Then—

He looked past Kai.

Toward the upper levels of the arena.

Where a separate platform overlooked everything below.

Figures stood there.

Silent.

Watching.

The Elite Division.

Students ranked far above the rest.

Monsters.

"…One of them has accepted."

The crowd erupted.

"Already?!"

"That fast?!"

"Who is it?!"

Kai turned.

Slowly.

His gaze rising to meet the figures above.

And then—

He saw him.

The same boy from earlier.

Standing at the edge of the platform.

Looking down.

Calm.

Unbothered.

Interested.

Their eyes met again.

And this time—

The distance between them felt smaller.

Not physically.

But in something else.

Understanding.

The instructor's voice cut through the noise.

"Elite Division Rank 8—"

A pause.

Then—

"Luca Virel."

The name settled over the crowd like weight.

Recognition spread instantly.

"Rank 8?!"

"That's insane…"

"He's challenging a freshman?"

Kai stared at him.

Unmoving.

Unimpressed.

"…Rank 8," he murmured.

Then—

A faint smile appeared.

Small.

Sharp.

Real.

> "That might be enough."

Above him—

Luca Virel stepped forward.

And for the first time since arriving at the academy—

Kai felt it.

Not boredom.

Not indifference.

But something far more rare.

Interest.

The barrier for a new arena began forming.

Larger.

Stronger.

Meant for something beyond normal evaluation.

The crowd shifted, drawn toward it instinctively.

Because everyone understood—

This wasn't part of the test anymore.

This was something else.

Something rare.

Something dangerous.

Kai stepped forward.

Toward the arena.

Toward Luca.

His steps remained calm.

Unhurried.

But his presence—

Changed.

Not overwhelming.

Not explosive.

But focused.

Sharp.

Like a blade finally being drawn.

> "Let's see if you're worth it."

And for the first time—

The academy held its breath.
