Chapter 44 - Chp 44

The hospital room was quiet.

Morning light filtered through the window,

Shinji stared at the ceiling. His entire body ached. He remembered the fight. The killing intent. The blade tearing through his side.

Shinji clenched his fist slightly. He had never felt a presence like that before. Not even close.

The door slid open.

Two figures stepped inside. One wore the white cloak of the Hokage.

Beside him stood the older shinobi Shinji knew well.

Hiruzen Sarutobi.

Shinji tried to sit up. Pain immediately shot through his ribs.

"Don't," Minato said gently. "You're still recovering."

Shinji settled back against the pillow.

"Lord Hokage."

Minato gave a small nod.

"We need your report."

The room grew quiet again as Shinji began speaking.

He explained everything. The fight. How every attack felt like it was barely avoiding death.

Minato and Hiruzen listened without interrupting.

Minato crossed his arms.

"You chose to engage him anyway."

Shinji stared down at the hospital blanket.

"If I ran, he would have killed others. ."

Minato studied him for a moment. Then he sighed quietly. "You survived an encounter with a Sannin."

He shook his head slightly. "Most jonin wouldn't."

Shinji didn't feel proud. All he could remember was how helpless he felt. "I couldn't stop him."

Minato's voice was calm. "No one expected you to." The Hokage stepped toward the door. "Rest. That's an order." Then he left the room.

The door slid shut behind him. Only Hiruzen remained.

For a moment neither of them spoke. Hiruzen walked slowly to the window. "You look troubled."

Shinji stared at his hands. "I wasn't even close."

The words came out quietly. "If he wanted me dead… I'd be dead."

Hiruzen nodded. "That's true."

Shinji blinked. He hadn't expected his sensei to agree so easily. "But that isn't the important part," Hiruzen continued. "What matters… is that you survived your first encounter with a monster."

Shinji didn't respond. Because part of him knew what Hiruzen meant. Orochimaru wasn't just another enemy. He was something else entirely.

"Get dressed," Hiruzen said suddenly.

Shinji looked up.

"…Sensei?"

"We're going somewhere."

Later that evening, they stood atop the Hokage Monument. Konoha stretched out below them.

Shinji leaned slightly against the railing, his bandages still visible beneath his clothing.

Hiruzen stood beside him, hands behind his back.

For a while they simply watched the village.

Finally Shinji spoke. "…I was scared."

The words surprised even him.

Hiruzen didn't look at him. "That's normal."

Shinji shook his head. "No… I mean really scared." "I thought I was going to die."

Hiruzen finally turned toward him. "There is no shame in that."

The old shinobi looked out across the village again.

"When he left the village… I lost a disciple."

His voice was quiet now. "Orochimaru was once my student."

"I am in no rush to lose another."

Shinji looked up at him.

Hiruzen met his gaze. "I spoke with the Hokage."

Shinji frowned slightly. "…About what?"

"About you."

The old shinobi's expression softened slightly. "You've been operating in the ANBU for some time now."

Shinji nodded slowly. "Well," Hiruzen said,

"That's changing for a while."

Shinji blinked.

"I've arranged for you to take time away from ANBU."

"…Why?"

Hiruzen gave a faint smile. "Because nearly dying to a Sannin tends to change one's priorities."

Then his expression turned serious again. "You survived Orochimaru."

"But if you ever face him again… survival won't be enough."

Shinji understood what he meant immediately. The gap between them had been enormous.

Hiruzen rested a hand on his shoulder.

"So from now on…"

"…you'll train with me."

"…Yes, sensei."

Hiruzen nodded.

"Good."

Later that night, Shinji walked through the quiet streets of the village. Word had already begun spreading.

People whispered as he passed. Some stared. Others simply watched.

Shinji ignored them. Eventually he reached the gates of the compound.

The home of the Uchiha Clan. The guards looked surprised to see him. "…You're already out of the hospital?"

Shinji nodded. "I'm fine."

That was only partially true. As he walked deeper into the compound, he noticed the looks. Curious. Some even shocked.

He knew what they had heard. The boy who fought Orochimaru.

Shinji stepped inside his home. For the first time since the battle, the tension in his shoulders loosened slightly.

Tomorrow, training with Hiruzen would begin.
