Chapter 1 - The Boy Called Zero

The world we believe to be reality is far more complex than it appears. It is a vast web, woven together by an invisible, mysterious energy known as Aether. This Aether is the root of everything. From blazing flames to flowing water, from biting ice to radiant light and deep shadows—everything is merely a different manifestation of it. Those who learn to control Aether are called Weavers. They are both the creators and the guardians of this world.

Ethelgard Academy was the most prestigious place to learn this art. It was not just a school, but a crucible where the future's most powerful Weavers were forged. Towering stone buildings, soaring spires, and a faint hum of energy in the air—everything about the place felt extraordinary.

Every day, the academy grounds offered a breathtaking sight. Some students played with spheres of fire dancing in their palms, while others bent streams of water through the air. Shards of ice floated weightlessly, lightning crackled in flashes, and everywhere one looked, colors and powers intertwined in a mesmerizing display.

But amidst this dazzling world, there existed a corner where magic simply ceased to exist.

And there stood Kaelen.

A thin, seventeen-year-old boy, whose eyes carried a fatigue far beyond his years, along with an unspoken pain. He wore the plain uniform of a janitor, a worn-out brush in his hand as he scrubbed the academy's gleaming marble floors. There was something mechanical in his movements, something habitual—as if he had been doing this for years.

Students passed by him without a second glance. To them, he was nothing more than a shadow—present, yet invisible.

Just then, a group of students walked past. At their head was Bryce—a well-known name in the academy. An A-rank Weaver who wielded the element of fire. A constant smirk of arrogance rested on his face, and he carried himself like the entire place belonged to him.

The moment his eyes fell on Kaelen, a mocking smile crept onto his lips.

"Look at that—our 'Zero' at it again," he sneered. "If you had even a trace of Aether in you, this job would take a second. But you… you're nothing."

The students around him burst into laughter.

Bryce flicked his finger lazily, and a small but sharp flame shot toward Kaelen's bucket of water. To him, it was a joke. To others, it could've been dangerous.

Kaelen didn't react.

He simply turned and looked at Bryce.

And then—something happened that stunned everyone present.

The flame didn't strike the bucket. It passed straight through it—as if nothing was there at all. It hit the wall behind and fizzled out, but the bucket—and Kaelen—remained completely untouched.

Silence fell.

For a brief moment, surprise flickered across Bryce's face, but it quickly twisted into irritation.

"Pathetic," he scoffed. "Even attacking you is a waste of time. Let's go."

Laughing, they walked away, leaving Kaelen behind.

He picked up his brush again and resumed cleaning, as though nothing had happened.

But inside his mind, a storm was raging.

They called him "Zero." And it wasn't just an insult—it was the truth. In a world where every person possessed Aether, he was an exception. He couldn't even feel it, let alone control it.

He was a void.

And yet, within that void lay a mystery no one had ever understood.

No Aether could touch him.

Was it a weakness… or a strength? No one had the answer.

A memory surfaced in his mind.

He had been a child then—seven, maybe eight years old. Standing among other children as their teacher asked them to produce a small light in their palms. One by one, they succeeded. Golden glows bloomed in their hands.

Then it was his turn.

He tried with everything he had.

But nothing happened.

Only emptiness.

The other children laughed, and he stood there—burning with humiliation and pain.

That day, he understood.

He was different.

And perhaps… useless to this world.

But fate had other plans.

Suddenly, a harsh, piercing alarm echoed across the academy.

Red warning lights flared to life. The ground trembled violently, and debris began falling from the ceiling.

Within moments, peace turned into chaos.

Then—a massive explosion.

One of the academy's walls shattered, and through clouds of smoke emerged a terrifying figure.

Voidspawn.

This was no ordinary creature. Its body was formed of shadows and chaos, with multiple glowing red eyes embedded within it. Its limbs resembled sharp blades, capable of tearing through anything.

Panic spread among the students.

Some fled. Others tried to fight.

But their attacks were useless.

The creature absorbed them, as if devouring every strike.

Bryce stepped forward, confidence unshaken.

He unleashed his strongest technique—a massive vortex of fire.

But the moment it collided with the Voidspawn, it was swallowed whole.

The creature grew even stronger.

In the next instant, it struck Bryce, hurling him across the ground. He slammed into a wall and fell unconscious.

Now, no one stood in its way.

Its gaze shifted—to an injured girl lying helpless on the ground.

Slowly, it began moving toward her.

And then—

Kaelen stepped forward.

Fear still gripped him, but something stronger pushed him ahead.

He placed himself between the girl and the monster.

"Stop," he said, his voice quiet—but steady.

The Voidspawn attacked.

But the strike passed straight through him.

And in that very moment—

Something changed.

A strange power awakened within Kaelen.

From his palms, a gray, ancient glow began to emerge. It wasn't Aether.

It was something else.

Chroma.

He struck the ground—and the world itself seemed to bend to his will.

The stone came alive.

And then—

The end of the Voidspawn began.

Within moments, the creature crumbled into dust.

Silence fell once more.

All eyes turned toward Kaelen.

Those who once looked at him with disdain… now stared in fear.

And far away, in a high tower, someone had been watching everything.

Headmaster Eldric.

A grave expression shadowed his face.

"The prophecy…" he murmured. "Zero… has awakened."

This was only the beginning.
