The air in the forest grew thicker as the trees closed in overhead,their ancient branches weaving a canopy that turned the sky into a patchwork of dim , silver light.Every step forward echoed too loudly on the carpet of mos and fallen leaves,as if the forest itself was listening.The scent of damp earth and old bark filled her nose ,but beneath it lay something colder—something that made the hair rise along the back of her neck.
She had not meant to come this far into the Elder Wood . The village elders had warned the childrens never to pass the cracked stone at the forest's edge,where the roots twisted like fingers and the wind carried whispers that weren't words .Yet here she stood ,with the first real moon of autumn hanging low and heavy above the treetops ,it's light sliding like a knife between the trunks.
A shadow moved between the trees— too smooth,too quick to be an animal .She froze ,her breath catching in her throat.For a heartbeat the forest fell silent,as though the world itself has taken a pause .Then ,from somewhere deeper among the trees , a voice hummed ,soft and wordless ,like a song half-remembered from a dream. It did not sound cruel ,but it did not sound quite human ,either .
She knew then that the stories were right: the Elder Wood was alive . And it had been watching her long before she ever stepped across its border .
