Chapter 14 - Battle of Gods

The battlefield tightened into a focused tension rather than erupting into chaos, as if the world itself was waiting to see which force would define reality first. The entity advanced with increasing stability, its form refining with each step as though it were learning how to exist properly under resistance.

Ethan remained at the front without retreating, posture composed and unmoving even as the pressure around him intensified with every passing second. Internally, however, his thoughts had already shifted from controlled observation into rapid calculation under conditions he was very clearly not trained to handle.

"…Alright, this is no longer a vague problem," he thought carefully, maintaining external calm despite the escalation unfolding ahead. "…this is active combat against something that learns in real time, which feels extremely unfair considering I just arrived here recently."

The entity accelerated again, its movement no longer testing but committing as the distortions behind it aligned into structured support. The battlefield responded to that motion, the ground itself feeling less stable as the presence forced its way deeper into alignment.

Ethan raised his hand slightly, reinforcing the pressure that defined the space around him with deliberate control rather than instinctive reaction. The air tightened immediately, forming a boundary that resisted the entity's advance and attempted to force it into stability.

This time, however, the entity did not stop, instead pushing forward against the resistance with visible strain that did not result in immediate collapse. Its form flickered but held, adapting in real time as if learning how to exist within the imposed constraints.

"…Yeah, it is definitely learning," Ethan thought dryly, maintaining composure despite the situation becoming significantly worse than expected. "…and I would really prefer if my enemies did not gain experience mid-fight, that feels like a design flaw."

Lightning erupted across the battlefield as Thor moved, his presence shifting from controlled readiness into full engagement without hesitation. Thunder rolled through the sky as he struck from the side, his attack no longer probing but decisive.

The impact landed with force, this time anchoring partially against the entity as its form reacted with visible distortion rather than phasing completely. Energy scattered across its structure, forcing instability into a shape that had previously resisted disruption.

"It is holding form under pressure," Thor said sharply, his voice cutting through the battlefield as lightning gathered again around him in greater intensity. "Your influence is forcing it into our state, but it is resisting with increasing effectiveness."

Ethan processed the statement instantly, forcing structure into the mechanics of a fight he was only beginning to understand. "…So I am dragging it into reality while it fights back harder each time, which is exactly as bad as it sounds," he translated internally.

Thor moved again without waiting, this time closing distance directly as lightning surged around him in controlled arcs that illuminated the battlefield. His strikes became faster, more precise, each one forcing the entity to react rather than advance freely.

The entity shifted its focus again, adjusting its movement with increasing clarity as it began responding to both of them instead of ignoring Thor completely. Its form stabilized further, becoming more defined as it adapted to the imposed conditions.

Ethan stepped forward.

Not out of confidence.

But necessity.

"…Of course I am moving closer," he thought with quiet resignation, maintaining posture as the distance closed further. "…because standing far away has clearly stopped being an option at this point."

The pressure around him intensified as he advanced, the space itself reacting to his movement as if reinforcing his presence within it. The boundary expanded forward with him, forcing the entity into a narrower range of movement.

The entity resisted again, pushing back against the pressure as its form flickered more violently under the increased constraint. This time, however, the instability did not fully destabilize it, but instead forced it into sharper definition.

"…That is not what I wanted," Ethan thought, tension tightening beneath his composure as the situation evolved again. "…it is becoming more real instead of less, which is definitely the opposite of the intended result."

Thor struck again, this time coordinating his movement with Ethan's advance as lightning surged downward in a controlled arc that intersected directly with the imposed boundary. The impact forced the entity to stagger, its form distorting under the combined pressure of alignment and force.

The battlefield reacted violently for a moment as the interaction peaked, the air itself cracking under the strain of competing forces. The entity recoiled slightly, its movement interrupted for the first time since it began advancing.

"It is destabilizing," Thor said sharply, his stance shifting again as he prepared to follow through without hesitation. "Whatever you are doing is forcing it into a state where it can be affected directly."

Ethan's thoughts sharpened as the opportunity became clear, the earlier chaos giving way to something far more structured and deliberate. "…So this is the window," he realized, "…which means I need to act before it adapts again and makes everything worse."

He raised his hand fully this time, not as a reaction but as a command, aligning his intent with the pressure that had been building around him. The response was immediate and far more controlled than before, the space itself tightening into a defined structure.

The entity reacted instantly, its form destabilizing under the sudden increase in imposed alignment as the distortions supporting it collapsed inward. For a brief moment, it lost coherence, its shape breaking under the pressure.

Thor did not hesitate.

Lightning descended in full force, his strike amplified by the alignment imposed by Ethan as it connected directly with the entity's core. The impact was no longer partial, no longer deflected, but complete.

The entity fractured.

Not cleanly.

But enough.

The distortion collapsed violently inward, the structure breaking apart under the combined force of alignment and direct attack. The battlefield shook as the presence destabilized, its form unable to maintain cohesion under sustained pressure.

Ethan held his position, maintaining control as the energy dispersed around them, ensuring the collapse did not rebound into something worse. Internally, however, his thoughts had already reached a conclusion that felt both reassuring and deeply concerning.

"…That worked again," he thought carefully, maintaining composure as the battlefield settled slightly around them. "…which is great, but also means I am going to be expected to do that consistently, which feels unrealistic."

The remaining distortions faded slowly, though not completely, leaving behind an uneasy silence that suggested the encounter was not fully resolved. The battlefield did not feel stable, only temporarily subdued.

Thor stepped back to his side, lightning fading gradually as he assessed the aftermath with focused attention. "It is retreating," he said, voice steady but still carrying the intensity of the fight. "But this was not its full strength."

Ethan did not respond immediately, though the statement aligned perfectly with what he had already begun to suspect. Instead, he remained still, gaze fixed ahead as the silence returned.

"…Of course it was not," he thought quietly, the realization settling with familiar weight as the tension remained beneath the surface. "…that would have been far too easy, and I have clearly not earned that kind of convenience."
