The Veil pulsed with dark energy, shadows writhing around Zara like living serpents. Every step she took sent ripples across the blackened cobblestones, whispering secrets and warnings.
Kai walked beside her, his golden eyes sharp. "The trials are not just tests of strength," he said. "They are tests of trust, will, and judgment. You will meet entities here—some helpful, some dangerous. Choose carefully."
Zara nodded, shadows curling protectively around her. "I understand. I'll be careful."
A sudden shimmer appeared ahead—a figure emerging from the darkness. Tall, cloaked, eyes glowing faint violet. Shadows seemed to cling to the figure as if they belonged to it.
"Who are you?" Zara demanded, stepping forward cautiously.
The figure bowed slightly. "Name's Serin. I've been… watching you, Heir. You have potential, raw and unrefined. The Veil can be taught… but only to those who are willing to face the shadows within themselves."
Kai tensed. "Be wary. Not all who offer help in the Veil are what they seem."
Serin smiled faintly. "I am not your enemy… yet. But you will need guidance if you are to survive the Night Sovereign's attention."
Zara hesitated but felt the truth in the words. "I… I accept your help—for now."
Serin nodded. "Good. Then begin."
The shadows around Zara shifted, reacting to Serin's presence. He raised a hand, and the air pulsed with energy. "Advanced shadow combat requires more than brute strength. You must anticipate, synchronize, and merge intent with your shadows. Watch and learn."
Zara followed his lead, tendrils of shadow coiling and twisting in response to Serin's movements. Together, they practiced strikes, parries, and binding techniques. The shadows moved fluidly, responding to thought as much as command.
A low whisper slithered into her mind:
"Impressive… but patience is thin, Heir… I will test you soon…"
The Night Sovereign. Zara's chest tightened, but she forced her focus back to the training. Each movement became sharper, more precise. Her shadows evolved, curling into new forms—blades, shields, serpents—all responding to her will.
Serin nodded approvingly. "You are learning quickly. But the Night Sovereign will exploit any impatience, any hesitation. Strength is nothing without control, strategy, and patience."
Zara clenched her fists. "Then I'll master all three. I won't let him break me."
Kai's golden eyes met hers. "Good. Fire alone will not save you, but determination… and discipline… will keep you alive."
The Veil pulsed around her, shadows whispering, alive. She could feel the Night Sovereign watching, testing, manipulating.
But for the first time, Zara smiled faintly. Her shadows swirled around her, powerful and obedient. She was ready to fight, ready to learn, and ready for whatever the Veil—or the Night Sovereign—threw at her next.
