Chapter 2 - chapter 2: Under Moon’s Gaze

The moon rose slowly, deliberately—like it understood the weight of the night.

Silver light spilled across the clearing, transforming the familiar pack grounds into something almost sacred. Shadows stretched long and thin, and the air hummed with energy that made Lena's skin prickle.

This was it.

The Mating Ceremony had begun.

Lena stood beside Maya at the edge of the gathering wolves, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. The crowd had grown thick, bodies pressed together, voices now hushed with anticipation. Even the wind seemed to quiet, as if nature itself was waiting.

At the center of the clearing, the ceremonial fire was lit.

Flames danced high into the night, casting flickering light across the faces of the pack. One by one, wolves began to step forward, their eyes glowing faintly as they allowed their inner wolves to surface.

Lena watched as a pair stepped into the firelight.

A tall male reached for a female, their hands brushing for a brief second before a spark—both literal and emotional—seemed to pass between them. Gasps rippled through the crowd as they confirmed their bond.

"They're mates," someone whispered.

Cheers followed.

Lena's chest tightened.

It looked so easy for them. So natural. As if the universe itself had written their story long before this moment.

"Don't compare," Maya murmured beside her, her voice low but steady. "Your moment won't look like anyone else's."

Lena nodded faintly, though her eyes never left the center.

Another pair stepped forward.

And another.

Each time, the same pattern repeated—connection, recognition, acceptance. Some bonds were met with joy, others with surprise, but all were… certain.

That certainty was what Lena feared most.

Because she felt nothing.

No pull. No whisper. No sign that someone out there belonged to her.

"Maybe…" she began, her voice barely audible, "maybe I don't have a mate."

Maya turned to her sharply. "Don't say that."

"But what if it's true?" Lena asked, her voice trembling now. "What if I'm just… not meant for this?"

Before Maya could respond, a sudden shift rippled through the crowd.

The murmurs died instantly.

The air grew heavier—charged, almost electric.

Lena felt it before she saw him.

The Alpha had arrived.

The crowd parted like a wave, creating a clear path toward the center of the clearing. Every wolf lowered their head slightly in respect, their bodies instinctively submitting to his presence.

Lena's breath caught in her throat as she finally looked up.

He was… overwhelming.

Tall, broad-shouldered, and impossibly commanding, the Alpha moved with a quiet confidence that demanded attention without effort. His dark hair fell slightly over his forehead, and his piercing eyes—sharp and unreadable—scanned the crowd with quiet authority.

Power rolled off him in waves.

This was not just a leader.

This was someone born to rule.

Lena quickly dropped her gaze, her heart racing wildly. Even looking at him felt like too much.

"Don't stare," Maya whispered urgently. "He'll notice."

Too late.

Lena felt it.

That sudden, undeniable awareness—like a thread snapping taut between them.

Her breath hitched.

Slowly, against her better judgment, she looked up again.

And this time… his eyes were on her.

The world seemed to freeze.

Everything—the fire, the voices, the movement—faded into nothing.

There was only that gaze.

Sharp. Intense. Searching.

Lena's chest tightened painfully, a strange sensation building deep within her. It wasn't fear—not exactly. It was something stronger. Something unfamiliar.

Her wolf stirred.

Not weak.

Not silent.

But awake.

A sudden wave of heat rushed through her body, making her stagger slightly.

"Lena?" Maya's voice sounded distant now.

She couldn't respond.

Her eyes remained locked with the Alpha's, and for a brief, terrifying moment… she thought she saw something flicker in his expression.

Recognition.

But just as quickly, it was gone.

He looked away.

Just like that, the connection snapped.

Lena gasped softly, her body finally releasing the tension it had been holding.

"What was that?" she whispered, more to herself than anyone else.

Maya was staring at her now, her expression a mix of confusion and concern. "What just happened? You look like you've seen a ghost."

"I…" Lena swallowed hard. "I don't know."

But deep down, she did know one thing.

That had not been normal.

The ceremony continued, but Lena could barely focus. Her mind replayed the moment over and over again—the way his eyes had locked onto hers, the way her wolf had responded.

That had never happened before.

Not once.

"Lena," Maya said quietly after a while, "has your wolf ever reacted like that?"

Lena shook her head slowly. "Never."

Maya's brows furrowed. "That's not a weak wolf reaction."

The words settled heavily between them.

Lena looked back toward the center, her gaze instinctively searching for the Alpha.

He stood near the fire, speaking briefly with the elders, his expression calm, controlled… but distant.

As if nothing had happened.

As if he hadn't just shaken her entire world with a single glance.

Lena's chest tightened again—but this time, not with fear.

With something dangerously close to hope.

And confusion.

Because for the first time in her life…

Her wolf didn't feel weak.

It felt like it was waiting.

Watching.

Awakening.

And whatever it was becoming…

It was connected to him.
