Chapter 3 - Secrets Beneath the City Lights

Amara's apartment felt smaller than usual. The rain had stopped, but her chest still heaved, her hands trembling from the adrenaline. She couldn't shake the image of Landon Vex—the way he had appeared out of the shadows, the way he had moved, the way those impossible eyes had locked onto hers.

Her mind raced. Who was he? Why did he feel so… dangerous, yet familiar? And why, when her instincts screamed at her to stay away, did her body betray her with longing she couldn't name?

The phone on her nightstand buzzed. A text from her best friend, Mia, asking if she got home safe. She hesitated, fingers hovering over the screen. Yes, I'm fine, she typed—but her thoughts were already elsewhere.

Before she could settle, a soft knock echoed at her door.

Her heart leapt. She wasn't expecting anyone. She edged to the peephole—

And froze.

Landon. Standing there, soaked again from the city rain, hair plastered to his forehead, leather jacket clinging to him like a second skin. His eyes, unreadable, scanned the hallway before settling on her.

"Amara," he said, his voice low, almost a growl. "You shouldn't be alone tonight. It's not safe."

She swallowed hard, trying to steady her voice. "You've been following me?"

"Protecting you," he corrected, stepping inside before she could protest. His presence was overwhelming—dangerous, intoxicating. The room seemed smaller, hotter, charged with unspoken tension.

Amara's pulse raced. "Why do you care?"

His gaze softened just enough to make her question every thought she had about him. "Because someone has been watching you… and I intend to make sure nothing happens to you."

She took a step back, fear and attraction warring inside her. "Who… who are you really?"

He shook his head, a faint smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. "All in good time, Amara. For now, just trust me—or don't. But tonight, you're coming with me."

Before she could protest, he grabbed her hand, leading her through a hidden stairwell behind her building, descending into a shadowy underground passage. The city above buzzed with life, oblivious to the secrets below.

"You're… taking me where?" she asked, heart pounding.

"To a safe place. For now," he said. His hand was warm, firm, and impossibly steady. "You're in danger—more than you know. And the only way to survive it… is to stay close to me."

The passage opened into a hidden underground loft. Candles flickered, casting shadows on walls lined with maps, weapons, and files. The air smelled faintly of leather and smoke.

Amara's jaw dropped. "What is this place?"

"Home, away from prying eyes," Landon said. He let go of her hand but kept his eyes on her. "And it's the only place where you'll be safe… for now."

She studied him, heart racing. Danger clung to him like a second skin, yet his sincerity was undeniable. Every instinct screamed at her to run—but some part of her… didn't want to.

Because something in his eyes promised that the fire she felt wasn't just fear—it was the beginning of a love that could consume them both.

And in the shadows of the city, amidst secrets and danger, that fire was unstoppable.
