Heartbound by Shadows

Chapter 1: The Day Magic Found Me

The market square buzzed with the usual morning chaos—merchants shouting, children chasing stray cats, and the scent of fresh bread drifting through the air. Liora clutched her basket of herbs, wishing for an ordinary day. But ordinary was something she rarely had.

Then, the world paused.

A shimmer of light brushed past the cobblestones, and for a moment, every sound stopped. Liora blinked, convinced it was just a trick of sunlight.

But it wasn't.

He was there.

A man, tall and commanding, stood in the center of the square. His storm-gray eyes scanned the crowd, and a faint aura of energy radiated from him, bending sunlight into a halo around his dark coat. Her chest tightened in a way she couldn't explain.

"Step aside," he said, calm but firm. With a flick of his hand, a cart of spilled apples righted itself. They tumbled neatly back into baskets as if guided by invisible strings.

The crowd gasped. Liora's heartbeat skipped—not from fear, but from something magnetic, something she had never felt before.

When his eyes landed on hers, a strange pull anchored her to the spot. Her thoughts scattered. Her feet refused to move.

Then, a shadow slithered across the square, moving toward a little girl clutching a basket of flowers. Liora's instincts screamed at her to run—but before she could act, the man was there. One sweeping gesture, and the shadow recoiled, vanishing into darkness.

Liora sank onto the fountain's edge, her pulse racing.

He looked at her, eyes unreadable, and said softly, "You're involved now. There's no turning back."

"I… I don't understand," she whispered.

"You will," he replied, and before she could ask another question, he disappeared into the crowd, leaving only the echo of his words—and a strange, undeniable connection between them.

Her ordinary life had ended the moment he appeared.
