Chapter 7 - After the Storm

Chapter 7: After the Storm — Something Watching

For a while, nobody said anything. It wasn't because they didn't have thoughts—it was because none of those thoughts felt big enough to match what they were looking at. Anything they said right now would've sounded small compared to the scale of what just happened.

The forest was gone.

Not damaged. Not partially destroyed. Not something that could recover over time.

Completely erased.

Where there should've been trees, shadows, and life, there was now nothing but open land stretching endlessly in every direction. The ground looked like it had been crushed from above, deep fractures running across it like scars. Some cracks were thin and jagged, while others were wide enough to swallow a person whole. A few still gave off a faint glow, like the energy responsible for all this hadn't fully disappeared yet.

The air felt wrong. Not hot, not cold—just off. Small sparks of lightning flickered into existence every now and then before vanishing instantly, like reality itself was still trying to stabilize. The smell was sharp and metallic, mixed with something burnt.

And right in the middle of everything—stood Igris.

He wasn't moving. His sword was lowered, and there wasn't even a trace of the overwhelming power he had just released. No aura. No lightning. Nothing.

Which somehow made it worse.

"…Yeah," Gojo finally said, scratching the back of his head. "I'm not gonna lie… that was kinda insane."

His tone was casual, but his eyes stayed locked on Igris.

Rias stepped forward, carefully stepping over one of the cracks as she looked around again. "No," she said. "That wasn't insane."

She crossed her arms. "That was necessary."

Kurumi tilted her head slightly, her clones fading away behind her. "Ara~ not even a trace left," she said with a small smile. "That's efficient~."

Artoria walked forward last, her expression calm but focused. "Complete annihilation," she said quietly. "That level of power…"

She didn't finish her sentence. She didn't need to.

Haruto didn't react at all.

He didn't comment, didn't look impressed, didn't question anything. He just started walking forward like everything that just happened didn't matter.

Gojo glanced at him. "You're really not gonna say anything?"

No response.

"…Yeah, figures."

There wasn't anything left to do there, so they moved on. The silence followed them, heavy and lingering. For a while, the only sound was their footsteps against the cracked ground.

Then the system quietly activated.

A faint glow appeared in Haruto's vision, followed by a familiar interface.

"…That's actually insane," Rias said under her breath.

Gojo grinned. "Now that's what I call worth it."

Kurumi smiled. "Ara~ we're growing fast~."

The items didn't drop physically. Instead, faint particles of light appeared in the air and drifted toward Haruto before disappearing the moment they touched him.

Another panel appeared.

"…Yeah, that's still broken," Gojo said.

"Efficient," Artoria corrected.

"Unfair," Rias added.

Haruto ignored all of them.

Because something changed.

At first, it was subtle.

The system flickered for a split second.

Then the air shifted.

Not violently. Not like an attack. But just enough to make it clear something was different.

All of them felt it instantly.

Like someone had just walked into the room.

Except there was no one there.

The system reacted again.

[ WARNING ]

High-Level Entity Detected

Status: Observing

Threat Level: ???

"…Okay," Gojo said slowly. "I don't like that."

Rias looked up. "…We're being watched."

Kurumi smiled faintly, though this time it wasn't playful. "Ara~ how rude~. At least say hello~."

Artoria stepped slightly closer to Haruto. "This is different."

And she was right.

This wasn't killing intent. This wasn't pressure.

This was something else.

Something higher.

Haruto stopped walking.

Then he looked up.

Straight into the sky.

There was nothing there.

But it didn't feel empty.

"…It's focused," Rias said quietly.

Kurumi's gaze shifted toward Haruto. "Ara~ it's watching him~."

Gojo exhaled. "Of course it is."

The air shifted again, slightly heavier this time. Not enough to crush them—but enough to make it clear that something had started paying attention.

"This isn't like the monsters," Rias said.

"No," Artoria replied. "This is something beyond them."

"Something above," Kurumi added.

Haruto didn't move.

"…Too early," he said.

The moment those words left his mouth, the presence changed.

It didn't attack.

It didn't react violently.

It simply pulled back.

Like something had paused.

Like something had decided to wait.

The pressure faded, but the feeling didn't disappear completely.

"…It left?" Rias asked.

"No," Kurumi said softly. "It's waiting~."

Gojo sighed. "Yeah… that's worse."

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then the system updated again.

[ MAIN QUEST ]

Objective: Destroy Heaven

Progress: 12%

Condition: Slay the One Who Watches

Silence.

"…Slay the one who watches?" Rias repeated.

Gojo blinked. "Yeah… okay, that's definitely worse."

Kurumi's smile widened slightly. "Ara~ so we're not just being watched… we're supposed to hunt it~."

Artoria's expression hardened. "So it isn't just observing."

A brief pause.

"It's part of the objective."

Gojo let out a slow breath. "Great. So we're being watched by something stronger than anything we've seen so far… and now we have to kill it."

"…Sounds about right," Rias said.

Haruto didn't question it.

Didn't react.

Didn't hesitate.

"We move," he said.

And just like that, they continued forward.

As they moved away from the destroyed area, the ground slowly returned to something more stable. The cracks became smaller, the glow faded, and eventually, the terrain started to resemble a forest again.

But not quite the same.

The trees were thinner. Slightly twisted. Their shadows didn't always match the direction of the light.

"Yeah, I don't like this place," Gojo said.

"It's unstable," Artoria replied.

"Or rebuilding," Rias added.

Kurumi smiled faintly. "Ara~ or maybe it was never stable to begin with~."

They kept moving.

Time passed, though it was hard to tell how much. The feeling of being watched never completely disappeared.

It lingered.

Like something was still there.

Waiting.

"So," Gojo said eventually, "we're just gonna ignore the fact that something out there was watching us like we're a show?"

"We're not ignoring it," Rias said. "We just don't have a way to deal with it yet."

"…Yet," Gojo repeated.

Kurumi laughed softly. "Ara~ we'll reach it eventually~."

Artoria's grip tightened slightly on her sword. "If it exists above this world, then reaching it means surpassing this world."

That wasn't a casual statement.

That was a direction.

And Haruto was already walking it.

"You're way too calm about all this," Gojo said.

No response.

"…Yeah, figures."

They kept walking.

Further away from what they destroyed.

Closer to something they didn't understand yet.

High above them, far beyond what any of them could see—

Something remained.

Watching.

Not with curiosity anymore.

But with focus.

It had noticed him.

And the moment Haruto looked back—

It understood something.

Not everything.

But enough.

Enough to wait.

Enough to not interfere.

Yet.

Because now—

It wasn't just observing anymore.

It had become something else.

A target.

And when the time came—

There wouldn't be distance.

There wouldn't be silence.

Only confrontation.

Haruto didn't slow down.

Didn't hesitate.

Didn't look back.

He just kept walking forward like the outcome was already decided.

And behind him—

His shadow stretched slightly longer than it should.

Subtle.

But not normal.

And far above—

Something watched that shadow just as closely as it watched him.

Because for the first time—

It realized something simple.

Eventually…

They were coming for it.
