Chapter 3 - Chapter 5 — The Interrupted Power

The strike should have landed.

It didn't.

For a fraction of a second—

Everything stopped.

Not the world.

Not the creature.

Just—

That moment.

The space between movement and impact.

Kaizen's hand was still raised.

The thin line of energy—

Still there.

Unstable.

Flickering.

But—

It didn't collapse.

"…hold."

He whispered it.

Not as a command.

As a realization.

The energy responded.

Not growing.

Not strengthening.

Just—

Holding.

The creature's strike descended.

Closer.

Closer—

Then—

It slowed.

Not visibly.

Not enough for others to notice.

But Kaizen felt it.

Like pushing through resistance.

Like moving through water.

"…so that's it."

The interruption point.

Not a failure.

A threshold.

He adjusted.

Not by force.

But by control.

Guiding the energy instead of forcing it.

The thin line shifted.

Became sharper.

Clearer.

For the first time—

Stable.

The creature reached him.

Its distorted limb inches away—

Then—

Contact.

But not with him.

With something else.

A barrier.

Thin.

Barely visible.

But real.

The impact echoed.

A sharp crack.

Not from the attack—

From the energy itself.

Kaizen's arm trembled.

The structure wasn't complete.

Not strong.

Not durable.

But—

It existed.

Zane's eyes widened.

"…what the—"

Eira stepped forward.

"…he blocked it?"

Nyra didn't speak.

Her gaze locked onto the energy.

"…no."

A pause.

"…he shaped it."

The creature reacted.

It didn't recoil.

It adapted.

Its form shifted.

Distorted.

Then—

It struck again.

Faster.

Heavier.

The barrier shattered.

Fragments of light scattered—

Then vanished.

Kaizen was thrown back.

He hit the ground hard.

Air knocked out of his lungs.

Zane rushed forward.

"Kaizen!"

The creature moved again.

Not toward the instructor.

Not toward anyone else.

Still—

Toward him.

"…it's targeting him."

Eira's voice tightened.

The instructor stepped in.

Finally.

Energy surged.

Stronger this time.

Sharper.

A blade of solid carbon formed instantly.

"Move!"

He cut through the space between them.

The strike landed.

Direct.

The creature's form split—

Then reformed.

"…it's not stable."

Nyra's voice was low.

"…but it's not weak either."

The creature twisted again.

Preparing another attack.

But this time—

The instructor didn't wait.

Multiple strikes.

Precise.

Controlled.

Each one cutting deeper.

Until—

The form collapsed.

Not defeated.

Not destroyed.

But—

Dispersed.

Like smoke torn apart.

Silence returned.

Heavy.

Uncertain.

Kaizen pushed himself up slowly.

His arm still shaking.

His breath uneven.

But his eyes—

Clear.

Focused.

He looked at his hand again.

Empty.

No energy.

No trace.

But the memory—

Was still there.

"…it worked."

Zane stared at him.

"You just blocked that thing."

Kaizen shook his head slightly.

"…no."

A pause.

"…I delayed it."

Nyra stepped closer.

"…you created a structure without a stable circuit."

Eira frowned.

"…that's not possible."

Nyra didn't look away.

"…it is now."

The instructor turned toward Kaizen.

For the first time—

Not ignoring him.

Not dismissing him.

Studying him.

"…what did you do?"

Kaizen met his gaze.

"…I followed the break."

Silence.

The instructor's expression shifted slightly.

Not understanding.

But—

Interested.

Far above—

That unseen crack pulsed again.

Faint.

Watching.

Responding.

And this time—

It didn't disappear immediately.

Kaizen looked up once more.

"…it's still there."

No one else saw it.

No one else felt it.

But something—

Was definitely looking back.
