Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The Ruins

The path to the ruins was rough.

Twisted roots and uneven rocks made every step a challenge. I kept the reinforced dagger ready, energy humming faintly in my hand. Pip floated just above my shoulder, alert, scanning the surrounding forest.

"Quiet," I said. "Too quiet."

Pip nodded. "This isn't like the forest edge. Danger doesn't announce itself here."

I tightened my grip, moving carefully. The farther south we went, the older the trees became. Bark was thicker, gnarled, roots rising like walls from the ground. Shadows stretched longer and darker. The air smelled heavier—damp and earthy, but with something else. Metallic, almost like blood.

"This place… has history," I muttered.

"More than you think," Pip replied. "And history like this always fights back."

Ahead, the ruins began to appear through the thick trees. Stone structures broken and overgrown, moss covering jagged edges. Columns leaned at impossible angles, some cracked in half. The place looked abandoned, but the energy around it was alive. Dark, pulsing energy.

"This is it," I said. "The Binding Mark is somewhere in here."

We stepped closer. A faint glow flickered at the center of the ruins. I recognized it instantly—the circular symbol from the elder's book.

"That's what we're looking for," I whispered.

"Not alone," Pip said suddenly, his voice tight. I froze.

From the shadows, figures emerged. Not full creatures—but remnants. Corrupted forms like twisted animals fused with unknown shapes. Their eyes glowed faintly, and their bodies shimmered as if energy was constantly moving through them.

"Looks like they're guarding it," I said, eyes narrowing.

"Good chance to test your progress," Pip said.

I nodded, stepping into a ready stance.

The first remnant lunged. Quick Step. Side dodge. Slash with the dagger. Energy Strike. It collapsed.

Another came from behind. I rolled, barely avoiding its grasp, countering with a precise strike.

One by one, I moved through them. My body felt faster, sharper—every dodge and attack flowing naturally. Quick Step kept me ahead, Energy Strike finished what the dagger couldn't.

Finally, only one remained—a large, hulking remnant. Its energy was darker, more concentrated, almost like a smaller version of the thing in the forest.

"Level reading?" I asked Pip.

"Unclear," he said. "But stronger than the others."

I exhaled, centering myself.

"Alright," I muttered. "Let's see if we can finish this."

The creature charged. I ducked, then sidestepped. Quick Step carried me to its flank. I slashed, energy gathering behind the dagger.

"Energy Strike!" I shouted.

The hit connected. The creature staggered, but didn't collapse.

"Not enough," Pip said. "You need more precision."

I nodded, focusing. Energy built around the dagger—sharper, concentrated. I feigned a strike to the left, then lunged upward, letting the full force hit the center of its chest.

A brilliant pulse of energy erupted from the impact. The creature froze, body convulsing, before dissolving into a faint shimmer.

Silence fell.

I looked around. The remnants were gone. Only the ruins remained.

At the center, the glow of the Binding Mark pulsed steadily.

I stepped forward, placing my hand on the symbol. Energy surged through me. Warm, controlled, and stable—unlike anything I had felt in the forest.

"This… is it," I said.

"Yeah," Pip said. "That will give you an edge."

I studied the mark. It seemed simple, but the power within it was immense. I could feel its potential to disrupt corrupted energy.

"This is what we needed," I said. "Next step… we take this back to the forest."

Pip floated closer. "And hope it works."

"I'll make it work," I said firmly. "We can't fail now."

I carefully lifted the Binding Mark. It wasn't heavy, but the energy it carried pressed gently against my chest, reminding me of its power.

"Ready?" Pip asked.

I looked toward the dark forest in the distance. The same shadows that had haunted me before waited.

"Ready," I said.

We started the trek back.

The real battle was coming.

And this time, I wouldn't just be reacting.

I would be fighting back.

Stronger. Smarter. Prepared.

Because whatever was waiting in the forest, it wasn't going to control me again.

It was time to end this.
