Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 8: XIAORAN'S SCHOOL CRISIS

**Haijing, China – Lin Family Apartment – 7:32 PM Local Time**

The video call connected with a soft chime, and Xiaoran's face appeared on Lin Tianyu's laptop screen. Behind her, he could see the familiar cramped living room – the worn couch, the family photos on the wall, the small shrine in the corner with incense for their grandparents.

But something was different. Xiaoran's eyes were red-rimmed, her jaw set in a way that reminded him of their mother when she was trying not to cry.

"They're here," she said quietly. "Sun Ting's parents. They showed up at the apartment an hour ago. Mom and Dad are in the kitchen with them now. I'm supposed to be in my room, but I sneaked out to call you."

Lin Tianyu's blood ran cold. "They came to your home?"

"Mr. Sun is yelling. Mrs. Sun is pretending to be reasonable, but she's worse. They're demanding we sign something – some kind of agreement admitting fault and promising to pay for Sun Ting's 'medical expenses.' Mom is crying. Dad is... I've never seen him like this. He's so angry, but he doesn't know what to do."

**SYSTEM NOTICE**

**SITUATION ALERT: UNAUTHORIZED CONTACT AT FAMILY RESIDENCE**

**SUN WEI AND SPOUSE PRESENT AT LIN FAMILY HOME**

**LEGAL STATUS: THIS CONSTITUTES HARASSMENT AND POTENTIAL INTIMIDATION**

**RECOMMENDATION: IMMEDIATE LEGAL INTERVENTION**

---

Lin Tianyu's mind raced, but his voice remained calm. "Xiaoran, listen to me carefully. I need you to go back to your room and stay there. Don't come out, no matter what you hear. I'm going to handle this."

"How? You're in America!"

"I have people. Trust me." He met her eyes through the screen. "Go. Now."

She nodded, disappearing from the frame. Lin Tianyu immediately opened a second window, calling Zhao Ting.

She answered on the first ring. "Tianyu? What's wrong?"

"The Suns are at my parents' apartment. Right now. They're pressuring my family to sign something."

Zhao Ting's expression hardened. "They're doing what? That's harassment at minimum, possibly extortion. Give me the address. I'm twenty minutes away."

"Twenty minutes might be too long. Can you call them? Intervene remotely?"

"I can call the local police – request a welfare check. But that might escalate things." She paused. "Tianyu, I need to ask you something, and I need you to be honest. Do you have any leverage on Sun Wei? Anything we can use to make him back down immediately?"

Lin Tianyu thought of the Tianyu EV memo, the tax audit, the bank covenants. All in motion, but none immediate enough for this moment.

"Not yet. But I will."

"Then let me handle this my way. I'll call the police, claim I'm a concerned neighbor reporting a disturbance. That'll get them there quickly and give us documentation. Then I'll arrive as legal counsel for your family. The Suns won't push with police present."

"Do it. Whatever it takes."

---

**Command Space – Simultaneous**

Lin Tianyu sat on the throne, holographic displays showing multiple feeds – Athena's analysis, Zhao Ting's location tracking, even a grainy image from Xiaoran's phone, which she'd left propped against a book, audio still running.

"...your daughter assaulted our child," a woman's voice was saying, sharp and entitled. "We're being generous by not pressing charges. All we're asking is fifty thousand yuan and a signed apology. That's nothing to people like you, but for us, it's about principle."

"Our family doesn't have fifty thousand yuan." His father's voice, strained but dignified. "You know that. That's why you're here."

"Then perhaps you should have thought about that before your daughter attacked ours." A man's voice now – Sun Wei, cold and condescending. "Look, I'm a reasonable man. I understand these things happen. But there must be consequences. Thirty thousand, then. And the apology. That's my final offer."

**AUDIO ANALYSIS: SUN WEI'S VOCAL PATTERNS INDICATE DECEPTION**

**HE HAS NO INTENTION OF DROPPING THE MATTER REGARDLESS OF SETTLEMENT**

**THIS IS A POWER PLAY, NOT A NEGOTIATION**

---

Lin Tianyu's hands clenched into fists. In all his planning, he hadn't anticipated this – that they would go after his parents directly, use their age and vulnerability as weapons.

"Athena," he said, his voice ice. "I need something. Anything. A pressure point we can use right now."

"Accessing... Sun Wei's company has a major shipment clearing customs in Shanghai tomorrow. Valued at ¥8 million. If that shipment were delayed, his cash flow would be severely impacted."

"Can we delay it?"

"Not directly. But the customs inspector assigned to his shipment has a known vulnerability – his son needs a kidney transplant. He's on a waiting list with no end in sight." Athena paused. "I could anonymously provide information about a compatible donor in another province. It would take 48 hours to verify, during which time his attention would be elsewhere."

"Do it."

"Host, this is manipulation of a government official. If discovered – "

"Do it. I'll deal with the consequences later."

---

**Haijing – Lin Family Apartment – 7:51 PM Local Time**

Two police officers arrived first, responding to a "disturbance" call. They found the Suns in the kitchen, Lin Tianyu's parents backed against the counter, Xiaoran's father holding a tea cup so tightly his knuckles were white.

"Everyone stay calm," the older officer said, surveying the scene. "We received a report of a disturbance. What's going on here?"

Sun Wei straightened, his expression shifting from arrogant to oily in an instant. "Officer, no disturbance. Just a private matter between families. We were discussing a settlement for an incident involving our children."

"That's not how it sounded to the neighbors." The officer looked at Lin Weiguo. "Sir, are these people here voluntarily? Do you want them to leave?"

Lin Weiguo opened his mouth, but before he could speak, the door opened again and Zhao Ting walked in, briefcase in hand, professional composure radiating from every pore.

"Good evening, everyone." She flashed a badge at the officers. "Zhao Ting, attorney at law. I represent the Lin family." She turned to the Suns. "I understand you're here to discuss a legal matter without counsel present. That's highly irregular, and frankly, borders on intimidation."

Sun Wei's eyes narrowed. "Who are you?"

"I'm the person who's going to file harassment charges if you don't leave immediately." Zhao Ting's voice was calm but steel. "You've entered this home uninvited, pressured vulnerable individuals without representation, and attempted to extract a settlement under duress. The officers here are witnesses. Would you like to continue this conversation at the station?"

Mrs. Sun grabbed her husband's arm. "Wei, let's go. This isn't worth it."

Sun Wei shook her off, staring at Zhao Ting. "You don't know who you're dealing with."

"I know exactly who I'm dealing with. Sun Wei, owner of Liu's Manufacturing, currently under tax audit, with a major shipment clearing customs tomorrow that I'm sure you're very worried about." Zhao Ting smiled thinly. "Good luck with that, by the way."

Something flickered in Sun Wei's eyes – confusion, then fear. He glanced at his phone, which had just buzzed with a message.

"Let's go," he said abruptly, pulling his wife toward the door. At the threshold, he turned back. "This isn't over."

"Yes, it is." Zhao Ting's voice followed them out. "But please, feel free to test that theory in court. I'd love to depose you under oath."

The door slammed. The police officers exchanged glances, then left, leaving Zhao Ting alone with Lin Weiguo and Chen Meiling, who were staring at her as if she'd descended from heaven.

"How..." Lin Weiguo started. "How did you know about his shipment?"

Zhao Ting smiled – genuinely this time. "I have a very resourceful client."

---

**Stanford Campus – Lin Tianyu's Apartment – 4:52 AM**

His phone buzzed with Zhao Ting's message: *It's handled. Your parents are safe. The Suns won't be back. I'll explain everything tomorrow.*

He let out a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding. In the command space, Athena reported: "Customs inspector has been notified of the potential donor. He's already requesting reassignment to verify the information. Sun Wei's shipment will be delayed at least 72 hours."

"Good. Monitor the situation. If he tries anything else – "

"I will take appropriate action. Host, may I speak freely?"

"Always."

"What you did tonight – using personal information to manipulate a government official – that's a dangerous path. It's effective, but it escalates the conflict. Sun Wei will eventually realize someone is targeting him. When he does, he'll look for who."

Lin Tianyu leaned back, exhaustion washing over him. "I know. But I couldn't let them terrorize my family. Not while I have the power to stop it."

"I understand the motivation. I simply advise caution. The system's capabilities are vast, but they're not invisible. Every action leaves traces."

"Then we'll be careful. We'll cover our tracks. And if Sun Wei does figure it out..." Lin Tianyu's voice hardened. "He'll wish he hadn't."

---

**The Next Morning – Video Call with Xiaoran**

Her face on the screen was transformed – still tired, but the fear was gone, replaced by something like wonder.

"Gege, who is this Zhao Ting? She was amazing. She knew everything about Sun Wei's business. She even knew about some shipment that made him run out of here like his pants were on fire." Xiaoran laughed – a real laugh, free and unburdened. "Mom made her stay for tea. Dad actually smiled. I haven't seen him smile in months."

"Zhao Ting is an old friend. We went to school together. She's very good at her job."

"She's more than good. She's... I don't know. She made me feel like someone was actually fighting for us. For me." Xiaoran's eyes glistened. "I've never had that before. Not really."

Lin Tianyu's heart ached. "You have it now. And you'll always have it. No matter what."

"I know." She wiped her eyes. "I know, gege. And I know you're behind all of this somehow. I don't know how, and I'm not going to ask. But thank you. For everything."

"Just promise me one thing."

"Anything."

"Keep going to therapy. Keep talking to Dr. Wu. This isn't over just because the Suns are gone. The damage they did – it takes time to heal."

Xiaoran nodded. "I know. Dr. Wu said the same thing. She's really good, gege. I actually... I actually like talking to her."

"That's all I wanted."

They sat in comfortable silence for a moment, the connection spanning oceans and time zones, brother and sister finally finding their way back to each other.

"I should go," Xiaoran said reluctantly. "Mom's making breakfast. She says I need to eat more."

"Listen to Mom. She's always right."

"Ugh, don't tell her that. Her head's big enough." She grinned. "Love you, gege."

"Love you too, little sister."

---

**Command Space – Later That Day**

Lin Tianyu sat on the throne, reviewing the aftermath. Sun Wei's shipment was delayed. The tax audit was proceeding. The bank covenants were tightening. And somewhere in Haijing, a man who had terrorized his family was learning that actions had consequences.

"Athena, what's the probability Sun Wei will connect these events to us?"

"Currently less than 5%. The customs delay appears coincidental. The tax audit was triggered months ago. The bank covenants are standard. Without inside information, he has no reason to suspect a coordinated attack."

"And if he does investigate?"

"Then he'll find a maze of shell companies, anonymous tips, and dead ends. By the time he gets anywhere close, his company will likely be insolvent. His attention will be elsewhere."

Lin Tianyu nodded. "Good. Now, what's next?"

"The equipment for the lab is on schedule. First deliveries arrive in 12 days. Chen Jie has prepared a detailed research plan and is eager to begin. Dr. Wu has secured the Renmin Road location at ¥11,000 per month with a five-year lease. She's already interviewing potential staff."

"And the battery prototype timeline?"

"Still on track for 45 days. Chen Jie has been working with the Research Center simulations remotely – he thinks he's just doing mental calculations, but the system is subtly guiding his insights."

Lin Tianyu smiled. Athena's integration was seamless. Chen Jie would never know how much of his "brilliance" was augmented by a hidden AI.

"Host, there's another matter we should discuss."

"What's that?"

"Your parents. They're currently unaware of your involvement, but your mother is suspicious. She asked Xiaoran last night if you were mixed up in something. Xiaoran deflected, but your mother isn't stupid. Eventually, she'll connect the dots."

Lin Tianyu considered this. His mother had always been sharp, always seen through his attempts to hide things. It was only a matter of time.

"We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. For now, we maintain the story – I got lucky with investments, I have connections, I'm helping where I can. Nothing more."

"And when she pushes for details?"

"Then I'll tell her the truth. Not about the system, but about the money. That I made it legitimately, that I'm building something real, that I want to help the family. She'll accept that. She just needs to know I'm not in danger."

"Understood. I'll prepare talking points for that conversation, should it become necessary."

Lin Tianyu leaned back, watching the holographic globe spin slowly. Two worlds, indeed. The one where he was a student, a son, a brother. And the one where he was a builder of empires, a shaper of destinies.

For now, they were balanced. For now, he could protect both.

But he knew, deep down, that balance couldn't last forever.
