Chapter 2 - chapter 2: the silence behind power

The boardroom was cold and silent.

Bright white lights stretched across the long polished table. Expensive leather chairs surrounded it, filled with men in dark suits.

None of them looked comfortable.

Some avoided eye contact. Others tapped their fingers nervously against the table. A few stared down at their papers as if hoping the problem would disappear.

But it wouldn't.

Because at the head of the table sat Jeremy Swiares.

Still.

Calm.

Unshaken.

In front of him lay a thin stack of documents. Financial reports. Transaction histories. Fake accounts.

Every page told the same story.

Someone inside his company had been stealing from him.

One of the board members leaned toward another and whispered nervously,

"They really thought we wouldn't notice…"

Jeremy slowly lifted his eyes.

The room froze.

His gaze was quiet, but it carried a weight that pressed down on everyone in the room.

"They crossed me," Jeremy said softly.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"And people who cross me…" he continued,

"…pay."

The door behind him opened.

Two armed guards stepped inside.

The sound of their boots echoed across the room.

Before anyone could react, they grabbed several men from their seats and dragged them forward.

One of them fell to his knees immediately.

"Please!" he cried. "We didn't mean it!"

Another tried to pull away from the guards.

"You don't understand—"

Jeremy stood.

His movements were slow and controlled.

He walked toward them without raising his voice.

Without showing anger.

That made it worse.

He stopped in front of one of the men who was struggling to stand.

The man's leg was already injured.

Jeremy looked down at him for a moment.

Then, without hesitation, he pressed his foot firmly against the wounded leg.

The man screamed.

Jeremy didn't move.

"You made your choice," Jeremy said coldly.

"Now you live with it."

A faint smile touched his lips.

Not warm.

Not kind.

The kind of smile that made people tremble.

In that moment, everyone in the room understood exactly who Jeremy Swiares was.

He was the second son of Senator Swiares.

The son who had taken his father's political empire and turned it into something far larger… and far more dangerous.

Unlike his stepbrother Lucas, who was loud, playful, and careless, Jeremy was different.

Jeremy rarely spoke.

But he saw everything.

Where Lucas filled a room with noise, Jeremy filled it with silence.

Where Lucas searched for approval, Jeremy already owned it.

People didn't laugh around him.

They lowered their voices.

They didn't argue with him.

They obeyed.

But beneath all that power…

Jeremy carried a secret.

A secret that could destroy everything.

Lucas.

They were not blood brothers.

But Jeremy's feelings for him ran deeper than anything he could ever admit.

Lucas was the only person who could walk into Jeremy's silence without fear.

The only one who could make Jeremy's cold expression soften.

When Lucas laughed, something warm stirred in Jeremy's chest.

Something he tried very hard to ignore.

To the world, Lucas was simply his younger stepbrother.

But to Jeremy…

Lucas was everything.

Jeremy protected him quietly.

Watched over him constantly.

Removed problems before they could ever reach him.

Not because he was asked to.

But because the thought of losing Lucas felt unbearable.

Yet Lucas never noticed.

To him, Jeremy was simply a dependable older brother.

Nothing more.

He never saw the way Jeremy looked at him too long.

Or the sadness hidden in his eyes.

In a house built on power and fear…

Love had become the most dangerous secret of all.

Jeremy's Office

Later that evening, Jeremy sat alone in his office overlooking the city.

The skyline glowed with lights beneath the dark sky.

His secretary entered quietly carrying a small box wrapped in black ribbon.

"Sir," she said politely, placing it on the desk.

"Your early birthday gift has arrived."

Jeremy raised an eyebrow slightly.

He opened the box.

Inside was a dark, elegant scarf.

For a brief moment, warmth appeared in his expression.

Then his phone rang.

The name on the screen made his chest tighten.

Lucas.

Jeremy answered.

"Did you get my gift?" Lucas asked cheerfully.

"I know you hate the cold, so I bought you a scarf that matches your scary boss image."

Jeremy chuckled softly.

It was a sound almost no one ever heard.

"You care about me this much?" he asked.

"Of course," Lucas replied easily.

"You're my brother."

The word struck Jeremy harder than any weapon.

Brother.

His smile faded slightly.

But Lucas didn't notice.

"So when are you coming home?" Lucas continued.

"Dad says we should prepare for Ezekiel's return."

Jeremy went still.

Ezekiel.

The first son of Senator Swiares.

A war hero.

A soldier who had lost his closest friend on the battlefield.

And a man who had not been the same since.

"Next week," Jeremy said quietly.

"I just need to finish a few things first."

"Okay," Lucas said. "See you soon."

The call ended.

Jeremy remained silent for a long moment.

Ezekiel was coming home.

And soon…

He would return to the same house where Lily now lived.

Two broken souls.

Moving slowly toward the same door.

Lucas at the Bar

That night, Lucas sat inside a crowded bar.

Music blasted from the speakers.

Colored lights flashed across the room.

His friends surrounded him, laughing loudly.

David leaned forward.

"Lucas, it must be nice having two terrifying brothers."

Benjy laughed.

"Seriously. One is a ruthless CEO and the other is a legendary war commander."

Lucas rolled his eyes.

"They earned everything they have," he said.

"They fought for it."

He smirked and lifted his glass.

"Me?"

"I'm just here to spend the money."

Everyone burst into laughter.

Later, the crowd slowly disappeared.

Lucas remained alone at the table.

Half asleep.

Waiting for his uncle to pick him up.

When he finally woke, the bar was quiet.

Empty.

Back at the Villa

The Swiares estate stood silent under the night sky.

The enormous villa looked almost like a palace.

Lucas stepped out of the car and walked toward the entrance.

The house felt too quiet.

As he crossed the courtyard, he noticed something unusual.

A light was on in one of the guest rooms.

Lucas frowned slightly.

He called out to one of the maids.

"Rosalie."

She appeared immediately.

"Yes, sir?"

"Who's staying there?"

She bowed slightly.

"Mr. Dennis's cousin, sir."

Lucas nodded.

"Turn the light off."

Rosalie hurried away.

Everyone in the house knew Lucas disliked lights at night.

It reminded him of something painful from his childhood.

Lucas entered his room.

The place was a mess.

Drawers open.

Bed sheets twisted.

Clothes scattered everywhere.

He frowned and snapped at the maid behind him.

"Why is everything like this?"

Then he immediately sighed.

"Sorry… just clean it."

The maid smiled gently.

"It's okay, sir."

"Being you isn't easy."

Lucas lay down on the bed and began scrolling through his phone.

Then one headline appeared on the screen.

"Chief Commander Ezekiel Swiares Returns."

Lucas's chest tightened.

He locked the phone without reading further and turned away.

Sleep came slowly.

And somewhere else in the massive villa…

Lily slept quietly in a guest room.

Unaware that fate had already begun pulling him closer to the Swiares brothers.

Closer than any of them could imagine.

And very soon…

Everything inside that house would change
